Abuja Velodrome to get Certification Soon-Cycling President

The Cycling Federation of Nigeria has said that plans have been perfected to ensure certification of the Velodrome at the Abuja National Stadium by the Union Cycling Federation.

President of the Federation, Engr. (Chief) Giandomenico Massari, stated that the certification was part of efforts by his administration to develop the sport in Nigeria.

He described the Velodrome as a state of the art infrastructure that has been left fallow for over 15 years. He said that the Abuja Velodrome was the only one in Africa and one of the best in the world.

According to him, the Velodrome was built in 2003 since then it has not been used for the purpose it was built for.

“Over the years, we have been making all efforts to ensure that the velodrome was certified, because it certification will be a very big boost for circling in Nigeria.

Giandomenico said that once the Velodrome is certified, a lot of activities can be generated” he stressed.

He revealed that what is delaying the certification process was the removal of stoves that are stored in the Velodrome.

Recalled that over three trailer loads of gas stoves allegedly purchased as election gifts by former President Goodluck Jonathan’ s campaign team was abandoned and locked up in the Velodrome for about two years.

He said with the lifting of the court injunction, the stoves will be removed and some minor repairs will be done on the Velodrome to bring it up to the required standard for certification.

Giandomenico said that before 2006, internal barrier was not a requirement for accreditation by the UCF, hence the need for the minor repairs.

“The Velodrome is okay, it was built with standard facilities and up to specification because in 2006 when it was built, internal barrier between the tracks was not a requirement for certification”, he stressed.

He said if the stoves are removed, funds will be raised immediately, stressing that the UCF had assured him that within two weeks the Velodrume will be certified.

According to him, once it is certify, they have already told us that they can award Nigeria the hosting right of the 2018 Africa Championship.

“This will be a boost for the country because with that, many other events will come to Nigeria even some international events can be organised in the Velodrume.

The president said that if all this is achieved, he assured Nigerians of hosting the 2018 African championship.
