The team was led into to the country by the Director of Federation of Elites Athletics Department (FEAD) Mrs. Tayo Oreweme.
She said judging by their performance the athletes have not done badly by coming 9th out of 71 countries and 2nd in Africa behind South Africa.
According to her, when we went to Glasgow in 2014 went with about 120 athletes we won 11 gold and if compared with this one that we prosecuted 71 athletes and won 9 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze medals then the athletes deserve commendation,” she explained.
She however, asked Corporate organisations to come to the aid of government by supporting the athletes in their preparation and during championships
“It is their corporate responsibility to support Team Nigeria whenever they are going for championships like the Olympics, Commonwealth and All Africa Games,” she said.
The Director disclosed that it is only one bank that sponsored the entire Canadian team to the Games by providing tickets and it required for the meet.
Also speaking on arrival, the President of Powerlifting team Queen Umoh Idris whose athletes won 4 gold and 2 silver medals for country said her they would have won more if they had presented more athletes.
“We have have the capacity to present 17 athletes but we’re only asked to bring 6. If had produced 17, am sure we would placed Nigeria in a very good position.
