CWG trials: Fashikun applauds AFN’s initiative for schools’ relays

…say it will boost young athletes confidence

Former junior 200m winner in 1979, Olajide Fashikun, yesterday applauded the leadership of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) for creating space for pupils and students of schools to run in the relays during the Commonwealth Games holding in Abuja.

An elated veteran Journalist,  Mr Fashikun, who in 1979 represented Kwara and won the 200m gold and fourth place in the relays as a secondary school student expressed: “this is a new angle to the trials which is in order. I can’t but appreciate this move. It will give these kids confidence to start running alongside the big folks and at a national level.”

Mr Fashikun who is also ex Zamalek SC of Egypt star intoned that, “we can really expand and make this feature a regular in all AFN schedules which we (Nigeria Sports Development Fund Inc) can support the federation. This is the trend in other nation’s of the world. Two, it would start exposing the participants to appreciate they can be as great as the stars they will also be opportuned to not just see but take pictures, touch and relate with.

Britarch Schools Abuja Athletics team is one of the teams invited to be on the relays programme. Students of the school were part of schools that attended the last Golden League held in Abuja. The school is part of the community development programme of Chief Mary Onyali.

It will be recall that Chief Ruth Ogbeifo-Balofin (weightlifting) has her community project in Offa in Kwara State, Chief Onyali and Chika Chukwumerije (taekwondo) have centres in Abuja.
