…Place Embargo On Awards By Student Union Body
The Newly elected President National Association of Nigeria Students NANS President Bamidele Danielson has assured that Student’s association under his leadership would not allow the student at any quarter to be used as a tool for political violence as 2019 general election is around the corner.
He equally said that an embargo has been placed on the conferment of awards by all student Union bodies in the Country.
Comrade Danielson stated this at the official inauguration of the new executive of the Association in Abuja promised that the new NANS leadership would do everything within her power to ensure the benefit of the students is duly given.
According to him, Nans under my leadership will not be a tool for political vendetta.
“We shall make sure that student’s interest first at all time and all places. We shall lead a struggle that will liberate student who is oppressed by their school management as well as the government.”
He, however, frowned at the state of education in Nigeria, thereby calling changes in policies and practice at all levels.
“The states of the educational system call for immediate action, hold and swift.
and we will act, not only to pressure the government to improve learning condition but to ensure that government and relevant stakeholders come together to lay a new foundation for academic excellence that will transform our schools to meet the demand of the new age.
“While addressing the challenges of our moribund educational system streaming from years of neglect and underfunding from successive governments both at federal, state and local level.
“There is a need for a new vision and paradigm shift of higher education, calling for major changes in policies, programmers and practices, curricula re-engineer and appropriate methods that will go beyond cognitive mastery of disciplines and apply new pedagogical and didactical approaches.”
The NANS President also gave an assurance that he would live up to the expectations of students by keeping his campaign promises such as stopping oppression and intimidation of students by school management or government, as well as attracting local and international training for members.
Speaking on the awards conferment’s to organizations, groups or individuals Danielson said it has become a source of distraction for students and therefore suspended until the coast is clear: “There was a need for the apex student body to reform all unions under it towards improving the education system and welfare of members.
He urged the Federal Government to seek more bilateral academic agreements with foreign universities.
Giving a historical perspective of NANS, a former Financial Secretary of the Association, Comrade Kennedy Tabuko said NANS, after its formation in 1982, had gone through a lot of harassment and intimidation especially during the military regime.
Comrade Tabuko also advised the new executive to defend the interest of students and ensure selfless service.
However, the theme of the event is “Students as major electioneering, developmental and leadership stakeholders in Nigeria.”
