Tijani Babangida Emerges New NANPF President

….Promises not to be distracts by Nigerian football politics

Former Super Eagles Winger Tijani Babangida on Tuesday emerged the newly elected President of  National Association of Nigeria Profesional Footballer NANPF after his only opponent Ashifat Olayinka Sulayman stepped down from the contest few minutes to commencement of the election in Abuja .


Babangida  elected unopposed as President of NANPF to steer the ship of the Union for the next three years.

While pronouncing his decision to step down, coach  Sulayman said he took the decision in the interest of the association.

He explained further that Kwara United FC head Coach Bala Abubakar’s  have been engaged with the national assignment and may leaves him with the responsibility as the head coach, saying that he wouldn’t need any distraction during his reign as Kwara United coach.

Babangida was a members of the Dream Team 1 Olympic Eagles that won football gold medal at the Atlanta ’96 Olympics.

He also played for the Super Eagles at the France ’98 World Cup, where he scored the consolatory goal for Nigeria in the 4-1 bashing the Eagles received from Denmark.

The only elective position of the day was that of treasurer which was contested between two ex-international Ben Nwosu, and Edema Fuludu, a contest that was won by Mr Fuludu with landslide victory of 38 to 1 votes.

Other former Nigeria Internationals in the new executive committee of NANPF are Clement Temile, (Vice President), Patrick Paschal, (Financial Secretary), Chikelue Ilonyeosi (Internal Auditor), Mutiu Adepoju ( Trustee).

It is expected that Babangida and the rest of the new executive members of NANPF will bring into the association fresh ideas that will move the union forward for positive development of football in Nigeria

Speaking shortly after the election,  President of NANPF Tijani Babangida promised to channelled their energy and focus  towards anything that will promote the game and the interest of members.


“I want to assured Nigerian that we shall not allow ourselves to be distracted by the politics of football; rather we will focus our energy toward promoting the growth of the game and most particularly to represent the interest of our members.”

He equally pleated to work with all relevant agents to bring back player union into PIFPRO

Babagida however,called all the members home and abroad to join the new executive to move the association forward.
