15 year-old, Gothia Cup Winning Goalkeeper, Onyemaechi Eyes Golden Eaglets

Having won the Gothia Cup with SKF Nigerian Eagles last month in Sweden, Anis Onyekachukwu Onyemaechi has set his target on working hard to make the Golden Eaglets team that will represent Nigeria at the WAFU B U17 tournament next month.

The 15 – year old, SS 2 student of Chrisland High School, Ikeja in Lagos, a product od Unique Soccer Academy, Lagos, has shown flashes of brilliance in some training sessions in the Golden Eaglets, as he continues his quest to convince the coaching crew to make the team.

At the Gothia Cup, Onyemaechi was very exceptional, where he helped SKF Nigerian Eagles to win nine matches enroute the podium finish to become champions of the tournament at the U16 category.

After arriving in Nigeria from Sweden, he continued his goalkeeping exploits with Chrisland School Football Team at the DOA football annual tournament, where his school signed out as champions.

With the qualities Onyemaechi has shown in between the sticks, there is no doubt that the teenage goalkeeper, who has demonstrated strenght of character and strong agility, has a bright future in the beautiful game, if he remains steadfast.

Salifu Abubakar Usman, Group Sports Editor of LEADERSHIP Newspaper, has been honoured with the Fellow of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) award, in recognition of his exceptional support for the association, professional journalism, and his significant contributions to sports development in Nigeria.

The esteemed accolade was presented during SWAN’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration, held in Abuja, marking 60 years of excellence in sports journalism across the nation.

Upon receiving the award, Salifu expressed profound gratitude, describing the honour as a source of inspiration and renewed motivation to further his lifelong dedication to sports reporting, promotion, and growth.

“This award gives me hope and motivation to do more. It’s a source of inspiration for me and my family, and I believe it will encourage me further in sports reporting and sports development in Nigeria,” he stated.

Salifu highlighted that this recognition serves as a morale boost following decades of hard work and impactful contributions within Nigeria’s sports community and beyond.

The SWAN Diamond Jubilee Celebration attracted prominent figures from sports administration, the media, and government sectors to celebrate individuals and organisations whose efforts have significantly advanced sports development and journalism in Nigeria.
