2023 FCT league Super 4: Turf Arena emerges winner

The Turf Arena football club of Abuja on Saturday emerged champions of 2023 FCT league Super 4 after a crucial goalless draw with Catholic Cadet of FCT in the game played at the old parade ground in Abuja.
The Turf Arena lifted the FCT FA Super 4 trophy at the Area 10 playing ground in Abuja.
The Turf Arena boys for their efforts pocketed the sum of N200,000.
Though, the two teams have five point each but the Champion Turf Arena had 2 goalless different that separate the two team.
Other team who participated in the Super four are Abees Golden Football Academy with 3 points while Jay 1 Football Academy have 1 point at the end of three matches play.
Speaking after the games the FCT FA Chairman Alhaji Abba Muhktarwho was represented by his Vice Chairman Alhaji Saliu Kolo said expressed delight with the turn of events in the just concluded FCT FA Super 4 in Abuja.
He counted the successes this year’s edition of the league recorded and expressed gratitude that the event climaxed without a hitch.
Chairman further said that the success of this year’s edition of the league will occasion the birth of newer and more centres that will accommodate the participation of remote area councils where burden talents will have the opportunity to equally play their way to the limelight.
“First and foremost, we have to thank almighty God for giving us this opportunity to start from the beginning to the end. actually we’re happy, and I think this is the first time in the history of the FCT”
“This is the first league we have many teams that registered and it was conducted peacefully with no problem at all, and we especially thank the chairman who has given his support financially and morally”
“What my chairman is doing is trying to create centres, about five centres for this competition to ensure that all, especially the remote area councils will be able to include their young ones and bring them to the limelight because we have alot of talented players in those remote areas but they do not have the opportunity of coming to town”
“But this time around, we have centres in Gwagwalada, we have centres in Bwari, we have centres in so many places. so in the next edition, I think we another centre even here in Abaji area council” he concluded.

SWAN President Calls for Gender-Fair Reporting in Sports Journalism

The President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Kemje Benjamin, has urged sports journalists to eliminate gender stereotypes and bias in their reports to promote fairness, inclusion and greater visibility for women in sports.
Benjamin made the call on Monday in Abuja while delivering a presentation titled “Gender-Sensitive Journalism: Removing Gender Stereotypes and Bias in Sports Reporting” at the Annual Women in Sports Leadership Training/Seminar for Journalists, organised by the Women Commission of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).
He said sports journalists play a critical role in shaping public opinion, influencing athletes’ visibility and determining which achievements receive recognition, sponsorship and investment.
According to him, the way the media reports women in sports can either reinforce existing barriers or help dismantle them.
Benjamin explained that gender-sensitive journalism requires fairness, accuracy, equality and inclusion, stressing that it does not mean giving female athletes favourable coverage or shielding them from legitimate criticism.
He identified common forms of bias in sports reporting, including giving men’s competitions greater prominence, focusing on female athletes’ appearance rather than performance, defining women by their marital or family status, and questioning their competence in leadership positions.
The SWAN president urged journalists to adopt respectful language, apply consistent professional standards and extend coverage beyond national teams to domestic leagues, grassroots competitions, female coaches, referees and sports administrators.
Using Nigeria’s sporting landscape as an example, he said the achievements of the Super Falcons deserved sustained analysis beyond match results, including discussions on investment, player development, professional leagues and grassroots structures.
He also noted that digital platforms offered opportunities to expand coverage of women’s sports but warned journalists against sensationalism, online harassment and sexist commentary.
Benjamin proposed seven measures, including gender-sensitive editorial guidelines, regular coverage audits, diversified sources, professional development, stronger grassroots reporting and measurable progress.
He called on SWAN to collaborate with the NOC, sports federations, leagues and clubs to improve access to information and strengthen women’s visibility in sports.
He urged journalists to ensure that athletes are judged by their performances and achievements rather than gender stereotypes.
“Gender-sensitive journalism must be fair, not favourable,” he said, emphasising that responsibility for change rests with reporters, editors, broadcasters, photographers and digital publishers.
