NBBF Electoral Committee rolls out Election timeline

The 2021 Electoral Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation headed by Dr Lanre Glover will commence the collection of forms for intending candidates between the 18th and 19th of October, 2021.

In a release by the committee ahead of the October 30 election slated for Benin City, Edo State, all duly completed forms must be returned on or before 26th, October with the screening scheduled to hold on 27th of October.

The committee directed that all forms should be submitted to the NBBF Secretariat in Abuja between the hours of 9am to 2pm or via mail addressed to the Chairman and Secretary of the Committee.

Organizing and supervising of the much anticipated elections and all decisions relating it will be in conformity with the 2019 NBBF status.

Eligible candidates will be vying for the vacant posts of President, Vice President and Zonal Representatives into the North-central, North-East, North-West, South-East, South-South, and South-West zones.

In consonance with article 20 of NBBF statutes, each member state (36 states and the FCT) shall be represented by 2 delegates (Chairman and Secretary) while any representative must produce a written advice duly signed by the Chairman on letter-head paper of the association in the absence of the aforementioned.

A final official list of candidates will be published, announced in the media and sent to all members of the General Assembly at least 2 days before the elective General Assembly is held.

All campaigns must cease 24hrs before Election Day while any form of corruption and other forms of direct inducement of voters may lead to the disqualification of the defaulting candidate(s).

The election will be monitored and observed by the Federation of International Basketball Associations representatives and those from the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Nigeria Olympics Committee.

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence anniversary on Wednesday October 1, Basketball Promoter and Initiator of Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, Mr. Igoche Mark, has commended the country’s athletes for their outstanding contributions.

In a heartfelt message, Mr. Mark praised active and retired athletes for consistently putting Nigeria on the global map through their dedication, hard work, and achievements. “Your dedication, hard work, and achievements have not only brought us pride but have also inspired a generation of Nigerians,” he stated.

The Sports Administrator urged the National Sports Commission to establish a platform to celebrate these athletes and recognize their invaluable contributions to Nigerian sports. He emphasized the need to honour their legacy and provide a framework for their continued involvement in sports after retirement.

To support athletes in transition, Mr. Mark recommended that “retirement plans be implemented to ensure a seamless transition into life after sports. This would enable athletes to plan for their future and maximize their post-athletic careers.”

Furthermore, he proposed a welfare package for retired athletes, including access to healthcare, education, and economic empowerment programs. “By doing so, we can show our appreciation for their service and ensure that they are taken care of,” Mr. Mark added.

As Nigeria celebrates its 65th Independence anniversary on October 1, with the theme “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” Mr. Mark’s sentiments echo the sentiments of many Nigerians who believe in the importance of recognizing and supporting the country’s athletes.
