No fewer than 20,000 Athletes international and local athletes will participate in the maiden Abuja International Marathon scheduled to hold on Dec. 17 2022 in Nigeria’s capital Territory.
The race will start at the Abuja City Gate – and take runners through Abuja landmarks like MKO Abiola Stadium, Nnamdi Azikwe Way, Murtala Mohammed Way, Shehu Shagari Way, Constitution Avenue, Central Business Area, and Federal Secretariat before finishing at the Eagle Square.
AIM aspires to be the unique event that everyone anticipates, drawing runners, the international media, and tourists to witness a world-class event in Nigeria.
At a press conference on Thursday in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT Abuja, AIM’s Managing Director Zsuzsanna Ogunmiloyo revealed that the first edition of the much-anticipated race will be taking place on December 17, 2022.
Mrs. Ogunmiloyo who is also CEO, of Unicentral Resources said she is delighted the Abuja International Marathon is finally moving away from being an idea into reality.
She urged all residents of FCT and Nigerians, in general, to join hands with Unicentral to ensure we have a world-class race that will sell FCT and Nigeria to the world as a tourist destination, a place to invest and do business.
On his part, Senator Ayo Akinyelure representing Ondo Central Senatorial District reiterated the Abuja International Marathon (AIM) as a fully-backed government project that already enjoys the approval of the National Assembly.
Senator Akinyelure noted that an initiative like the AIM which is guaranteed to raise the profile of Abuja as a city and Nigeria as a whole will be nurtured into a world-class event.
Speaking also was the project coordinator of AIM Femi Abegunde said Abuja, a beautiful city with an excellent road network deserves an international marathon that will showcase her beauty to the world.
He said the Marathon is to empower the youths and improve the FCT’s Hon. Muhammad Musa Bello Minister, FCT economy; especially the hospitality industry, transportation, and others.
“Before the Abuja International Marathon (AIM), Abuja was Africa’s only capital city without an international marathon. AIM has, however, taken away that blemish.
“The race will engage 2000 FCT residents as volunteers.”
Abegunde enjoined the friends of the FCT and Corporate Nigeria as a whole to key into the Abuja International Marathon.

Mahanaim FC too good for Green Lock in first match of the year
Mahanaim FC kicked-off year 2025 with a victory over Greenlock FC on Saturday, at the Bwari Township Stadium. Goals from Aliyu Imran and Nambou Roman were enough to secure victory for the boys in our first match of the year.
Both teams hadn’t met since 2023 when we cruised to a 2-nil win over them. That result set the tone for our match on Saturday, with our opponents hoping to get one over us this time.
Our Coaches, Saheed Jimoh and Jackson Mbuk had set up a line up which had a blend of young players and the experienced ones, including Haruna Abdullahi, who also got a goal the last time we played GreenLock.
After the opening exchange in first few minutes, Haruna bursted through the middle into the opponents 18-yards, Dribbling his way past three players before setting up Aliyu Imran who finished the move with a goal from close range. The game became very close from that point onwards with only the goal separating the teams.
After the break, the match became more open as we pushed forward searching for the second goal. GreenLock FC came close a couple of times before finding an equaliser through a low free- kick from Samuel Daniel, that went past our Goal-Keeper, David Adolphus.
Barely two minutes after the equaliser, Haruna Abdullahi once again conjured a magical pass that found Nambou Roman who had replaced Aliyu Imran in the attack. Roman’s well timed run was complemented by Haruna’s defence spliting pass. Roman lobbed the ball over the on-rushing goalkeeper into the net, to restore our lead.
GreenLock FC fought fiercely to find an equaliser but our defence line which had Nura Yahaya, Jesse Mokele, Salisu Hamisu and Marcus Haruna stood firm with the help of the midfielders, Daniel Egwuatu and Ikoh Danjuma, as we gained another victory over GreenLock FC in our first match of 2025.
