… Rolls out stiffer sanction

Just a few days after the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) withdrew certificates of National Service from 101 individuals from the University of Calabar due to fraudulent acts in their mobilization processes, the Scheme has taken further action set to show another 77 Corps members the exit door.

The affected individuals person include 54 serving corps members across various states, 4 corps members whose certificates are yet to be produced, and 19 newly registered corps members. All will be demobilise from the service due to their involvement in fake mobilisation.

This recent action brings the total number of corps members expelled for fake mobilization to 178 in the last two weeks.

The Director-General of the Scheme, Brigadier General YD Ahmed reveal this details on Friday in Abuja while addressing journalists about the crackdown on fake corps members whose certificates have been withdrawn.

General Ahmed expressed that among the number of fake corps members whose certificates have been invalidated, the State Coordinators of the affected 54 fake corps members across across country have been communicated to demobilise them.

According to him, the most important thing is for everybody to know that they can only try to cut corners but can’t go away with it. For purposes of the record, the actual number reported is 178, the certificates we have invalidated are 99, the exception certificates are two, put together they are 101.

“We have four certificates that are not yet produced, and they are put on hold now. The four fake corps members that are supposed to collect these certificates cannot collect them again. We have 19 fake prospective corps members waiting to be mobilised for orientation that have been blocked in our system.

“We have 54 serving corps members in various states. We have communicated to our various State Coordinators to demobilize them. We are likely going to prosecute them because they are supposed to refund the federal government of the various allowances they have collected.

“We are not going to allow them to go free like that. There is no way the scheme will know the authenticity of whether those mobilised actually graduated from various institutions. It is from the names given to us that we mobilise. There is a special portal handled by various institutions which we don’t have control over. We cannot add or reduce. It is purely the control of various institutions. We work on the names given to us,” he explained.

He however, commended, the Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, for effort and selfless service and patriotism: She came to our national headquarters to report that she has observed that some names mobilised for the scheme that ought not to be there.

“I gave kudos to the VC for showing concerns and patriotism. We sat with her to review the issue, we went into our ITC data and discovered that all the names in the list are there as she reported. I promised the VC and fulfilled my promise that all the names in the list should be invalidated

“I must admit that this trend did not start under my administration. Before I assumed the position of DG, there was a time we discovered that a bread seller was mobilised as a corps member. We have always had collaboration with the committee of Vice Chancellors. But the truth is the trend lays on the integrity of the institutions concerned..

When asked if there wil, be punishment for those who involve in the act ? DG replied: “Sometimes you sanction the institution for the individual’s for negligence but ended up sanctioning an innocent person. If we sanction the institution what about the innocent graduates that did not do anything. We will end up making them to suffer for the culprits.

“Going forward, we are going to sit down with the stakeholders to appraise this this issues and map the best punitive measures to take against it and check future occurrence of such incidents. If serious measures are taken against them, it will serve as deterrent to others,” he assured.

The Publisher of The Eagle Times Nigeria, Sir Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, has pledged that the newspaper will promote accountability, credible journalism and public-interest reporting in its coverage of national affairs.
Chukwunyere made the commitment on Thursday, October 1, 2026, during the official unveiling and launch of The Eagle Times Nigeria.

He said the new media organisation was established not merely to add another newspaper to Nigeria’s media landscape, but to provide a platform committed to serving the public interest.

According to him, the newspaper’s guiding philosophy, “The Voice for the People, The Watchdog for the Nation,” places a responsibility on the organisation to listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, highlight issues affecting their daily lives and scrutinise those entrusted with public responsibilities.

“To be a voice for the people means that we must listen to Nigerians, tell their stories, highlight their concerns and give visibility to issues that affect their daily lives,” he said.

The publisher added that The Eagle Times would be guided by accuracy, fairness, professionalism, credibility and responsible journalism, stressing that the newspaper would not publish stories merely because they were sensational.

“We will verify. We will investigate. We will seek the other side. We will correct our mistakes when we make them,” he said.

Chukwunyere further stated that the newspaper would endeavour to give individuals and organisations the opportunity to respond whenever allegations were made against them.
“Our commitment is not to any political party, government or individual. Our primary commitment is to journalism, to truth and to the Nigerian public,” he said.

He noted that the newspaper was launching at a time when the media industry was undergoing rapid transformation, with audiences increasingly consuming news through digital platforms, including websites, television, podcasts and social media.

He said The Eagle Times would therefore operate as a multimedia organisation, combining its newspaper with digital platforms and The Eagle Times TV to reach audiences across different channels.

According to him, the organisation also intends to create opportunities for young journalists, writers, photographers, producers, digital creators and other media professionals to develop their skills and contribute to journalism and national development.

Chukwunyere said the newspaper’s coverage would include politics, governance, business, economy, security, judiciary, education, health, technology, sports, entertainment, lifestyle and international affairs.

He, however, said the organisation intended to distinguish itself not only by the subjects it covered but by the quality and approach of its journalism.

We want to tell stories that matter, we want to investigate issues that require investigation, we want to highlight Nigerians who are making a difference, and we want to give communities that are often ignored an opportunity to be heard,” he said.

The publisher acknowledged the challenges involved in establishing a newspaper, saying the venture required investment, commitment, professional discipline and the courage to pursue an idea.

He expressed appreciation to the management, editorial, reporting, production and digital teams, as well as families, friends, partners and supporters who contributed to the establishment of the organisation.

Chukwunyere also assured readers, viewers and the newspaper’s digital audience that The Eagle Times would strive to earn their trust and remain accountable to the standards it had set for itself.

He said the newspaper’s success would not be measured only by circulation figures, website traffic or social media followers, but also by the confidence Nigerians placed in its journalism.

“Today, we spread our wings. Today, The Eagle Times takes flight,” he said, reaffirming the newspaper’s commitment to its slogan: “The Voice for the People, The Watchdog for the Nation.”
