AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria Thumbs Katsina State for Peaceful Local Government Elections

Joel Ajayi
The African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Nigeria has commended the Executive Governor of Katsina State, His Excellency Dikko Umar Radda, the Katsina State Independent Electoral Commission, and the people of Katsina State for the peaceful and transparent conduct of the Local Government Council (LGC) elections held on February 15, 2025.
An observer team from AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, led by Deputy Director and Head of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Department, Mallam Garba Shehu, visited various wards and polling units to assess the election process. The team observed a high level of orderliness and commended the peaceful disposition of voters, political party agents, security personnel, and other stakeholders.
While the agency is yet to release an official report, preliminary observations indicate that the absence of political interference significantly contributed to the smooth electoral process.
“We have it on good authority that His Excellency, Governor Dikko Umar Radda, is the first governor of the state to oversee LGC elections from one administration to another without interfering with due process, appointing caretaker chairmen, or unlawfully extending the tenure of incumbents. This commitment to democratic principles has played a crucial role in ensuring a peaceful and credible election,” said Mallam Shehu.
AUDA-NEPAD Nigeria, through its APRM mandate, remains committed to promoting democracy and good governance in the country. The agency also aligns with the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in safeguarding the constitutional rights of local governments and enhancing democratic processes at all levels.

FMSTI Cooperative Society trains members in skills, health management, others-President

The Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (FMSTI) Cooperative Society has trained its members in various skills and capacity-building programmes to ensure self-sustainability after retirement.
Mrs Ronnel Dola, President of the society, disclosed this during the society’s 25th Anniversary and Gala Night held on Friday in Abuja.
Dola, who attributed the cooperative’s success to divine guidance, highlighted several achievements recorded during her tenure.
“The cooperative has grown significantly in membership and strength since I joined in 2003 and we have become like a family.”
According to her, the society has conducted capacity-building programmes, provided medical support for members battling ailments like cancer and hypertension, and trained cooperators in poultry farming and entrepreneurship to prepare them for life after active service.
She assured members that retirement held no fears for them, as the cooperative ensures that retirees received their full savings promptly after service.
“We ensure that our members receive their total servings one month after retirement. During my tenure, 120 members have retired, and to the glory of God, all have received their benefits.”
As her tenure ended, Dola prayed for continued progress for the incoming executive members.
In his remarks, former president Alhaji Salihu Abdul-Raheem, represented by Mrs Hauwa Owodunni, expressed satisfaction with the cooperative’s uninterrupted 25 years of existence.
“It is inspiring to note that the society has recorded remarkable milestones over the years.”
He said that the cooperative’s membership grew from 272 in 2023 to 1,389 in 2024, attributing this expansion to the commitment of its members.
Similarly, Mr Fagboore Anthony, a Deputy Director in the ministry and cooperative member, described his membership as a rewarding experience.
He encouraged FMSTI staff and other civil servants to join cooperative societies, emphasizing the numerous benefits.
” Being a member has been one of my best decisions. I advise civil servants to join a cooperative in their workplace for financial security and growth”.
The event featured the launch of the cooperative’s magazine, as well as the presentation of awards to past presidents and outstanding members.
