Convener of the All-Africa Medical Wellness Expo and Founder, AMWE Medical and Wellness Foundation, Mr. Usman Isah has called on the Federal Government to show more commitment in the Nigeria’s health sector by providing the necessary environment for quality healthcare delivery services to thrive in the country.

Mr. Isah, who is also the Executive Chairman of AMWE Medical and Wellness Foundation, made the call at a media briefing in Abuja as part of the highlights prelude to the 3rd edition of the All Africa Medical Wellness Expo, AMWE 2025 scheduled to hold in Abuja from Wednesday 27th – Thursday 29th August, 2025, noting that Nigeria has all it takes to offer World class medical services and become a premier medical tourism destination in Africa.

He lamented Nigeria’s loss of approximately $2 billion US Dollars annually to outbound medical tourism in capital flight that undermines the growth and development of the nation’s healthcare delivery system, adding that it is the neglect of the country’s healthcare infrastructure and crisis of confidence in the health sector which created a vacuum that foreign medical destinations have exploited.

Speaking further, Mr. Isah called for a deliberate policy by government that focuses on the workability of health tourism through strategic partnership and collaboration with critical stakeholders and key players in the health and tourism sector to improve standard of service delivery and achieve the desired growth and development as well as evolve a high quality service delivery that will rank among the best globally in the nation’s healthcare delivery by which it will attract patronage from foreign health and medical seekers into the country.

He advised government to further encourage healthcare service providers to focus on demand side of specialized medical treatment instead of being discouraged by financial barriers and challenges facing the sector, adding that this will promote inbound and intra-bound medical tourism in the country.

He said the AMWE 2025 event is a premier Conference and Exhibition that aims to bring together healthcare service providers, stakeholders, investors, innovators, policy makers, key players, medical and tourism professionals, wellness and fitness practitioners and a host of others from across Africa and beyond with the view to providing lasting solutions to the challenges of the Nigeria health sector and together, achieve the overall goal of a high level universal health coverage and be globally competitive.

The three-day event with the Theme: Medical and Wellness Tourism: Bridging Global Healthcare Gaps also has a number of Sub Themes such as: Repositioning Nigeria’s Health Sector; from Domestic Excellence to Global Recognition; The Drivers of Global Healthcare Transformation; SWOT Analysis of Nigeria’s Health Sector; Connectivity and inter-play Between Tourism and the Health Sectors in Global Economic Space among others.

Also expected to feature during the AMWE 2025 Expo, are: The Summit, featuring the presentation of well selected papers to be presented by highly distinguished professionals in both health and tourism industry-sectors from Nigeria and from some selected African countries; Exhibition of products and services of the health and tourism sectors by highly acclaimed international bodies and organizations, Business to Business & Government to Business Meetings, Networking, Panel of Discussants and a lot more.

As part of activities to round up the AMWE 2025 Expo, there will be an Award and Gala Night where individuals and organizations that have distinguished themselves in excellence performance by show of commitment and dedication in their chosen fields will be honoured with various categories of meritorious awards as a way of recognition and commendation along-side musical/cultural entertainments and refreshments.

Mr. Isah explained further the link and the interconnectivity between the health and the tourism sectors, saying they both complement each other’s socio-economic performance in the economic growth and development of the country via travel paid expenses and medical care incurred finances, urging government ministries and agencies in-charge of both health and tourism industries to collaborate with one another for the development of the sectors and the growth of the national economy.

High level dignitaries and personnel in both public and private sectors, Key-players, Critical stakeholders, Medical Professionals, the Organized Private Sector, Government functionaries, Insurance and Financial Institutions, Military and Para-military Organizations, Trade facilitators, Embassies and members of the Diplomatic communities, Legislators, Legal and the Judiciary and the Media are expected to grace the highly averred Three-Day Event of AMWE 2025 Expo.

In a major step toward advancing inclusive education in Nigeria, Deaf-in-Tech, an initiative of Data-Lead Africa, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) to establish a Professional Master’s Degree in Disability Studies.

The signing ceremony, held at Deaf-in-Tech’s headquarters in Abuja, featured a goodwill message from Prof. Adaka Terfa Ahon, Director of the Centre for Disability Studies, who represented FULAFIA’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman. He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to championing disability and inclusion in its academic innovation and planning.

The new Master’s programme will adopt a hybrid learning model, with online classes complemented by in-person sessions at Deaf-in-Tech’s training facility in Abuja. It is designed to build expertise in disability-inclusive governance, education, and development across sectors.

Executive Director of Deaf-in-Tech and Co-Founder of Data-Lead Africa, Dr. Arowolo Ayoola, described the collaboration as a “structural shift” in how institutions and professionals engage with disability issues. “The inclusion journey must begin with knowledge, and we are proud to partner with a progressive university like FULAFIA,” he said.

Beyond the postgraduate programme, the partnership will also establish a Deaf-in-Tech Club on FULAFIA’s campus — the first of its kind — to empower Deaf students with technology skills, mentorship, and innovation opportunities. Additional initiatives include a ₦1 million academic excellence reward for any Deaf student who graduates with a First Class, as well as the development of a disability-accessible website and digital database for the Centre for Disability Studies, built to WCAG 2.1 global accessibility standards.

The alliance underscores both institutions’ commitment to building inclusive systems and celebrating excellence, while positioning Deaf-in-Tech as a catalyst for bridging the gap between disability and the digital economy.
