Former Super Eagles Captain Reflects on How His Early Years in Germany Molded His Career and Character
Former Super Eagles captain and mercurial midfield maestro, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, has opened up about the defining influence his formative football years in Germany had on his life and career, crediting the country’s discipline, structure, and professionalism for shaping him into one of Africa’s most celebrated players.
In the latest edition of The Exchange Podcast anchored by Femi Soneye, which began trending on Sunday, Okocha reflected with nostalgia on his early football journey — one that began far from the glamour of the Premier League or the global spotlight.
“Germany was my first stop, and I went there when I was just 17,” Okocha recalled. “I always say I went to Germany as a boy and left as a man. The discipline and professionalism they taught me in Germany — I didn’t see it anywhere else. That was what helped me throughout my career.”
From Enugu to the Bundesliga: The Making of a Star
Born in Enugu, southeastern Nigeria, in 1973, Okocha’s raw footballing genius was evident from a young age. His mesmerizing dribbles and flair quickly earned him a reputation in local circles, but it was his move to Germany in 1990 that changed everything.
Arriving as a teenager with limited resources and little exposure to European football culture, Okocha joined Borussia Neunkirchen, a third-division club. It was there that his talent caught the eye of scouts, leading to a breakthrough transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt in 1992 — the club where he would truly announce himself to the world.
The Moment That Announced Okocha to the World
While at Eintracht Frankfurt, Okocha created one of football’s most replayed highlights — his sensational solo goal against Karlsruhe SC in 1993, where he dribbled past legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn and several defenders before slotting home. That goal was later voted Goal of the Year in Germany and remains etched in Bundesliga history as a moment of pure artistry.
His performances in Frankfurt made him a cult hero and paved the way for later moves to Fenerbahçe in Turkey, Paris Saint-Germain in France, and finally the English Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, where he became captain and one of the most beloved foreign players in club history.
Germany’s Lasting Impact
Okocha emphasized that beyond football skills, Germany’s biggest impact on him was its discipline, punctuality, and work ethic — values that guided his journey both on and off the pitch.
He also revealed that adapting to a new culture as a teenager was not easy. Language barriers, weather, and homesickness were constant challenges. Yet, those very struggles built resilience.

Today, Jay-Jay Okocha is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most technically gifted players — a magician with the ball whose flair defined a generation. From his Bundesliga beginnings to his exploits with the Super Eagles, including Olympic gold in 1996 and multiple Nations Cup appearances, his journey stands as a masterclass in growth through discipline.
Okocha’s reflection is not just a personal story — it’s a timeless reminder that behind every moment of brilliance lies years of discipline, learning, and transformation.

Reps Security Session: Wale Raji Proposes Service Extension, Special Courts to Tackle Insecurity”

The House of Representatives, on Thursday, intensified its search for sustainable solutions to Nigeria’s worsening security challenges as lawmakers continued it’s Special Plenary Session dedicated to reviewing the nation’s security architecture and strengthening its legislative response to growing threats.
Contributing to the debate, Hon. Wale Raji Member Representing Epe federal constituency of Lagos State and the Chairman House committee on livestock development presented far-reaching proposal aimed at strengthening national defense and tackling the escalating wave of insecurity across the country.
Hon. Raji commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the recruitment of additional personnel into the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Army. He, however, stressed that beyond new recruitment, Nigeria must urgently retain the institutional memory and field experience of officers nearing retirement.
Raji proposed an extension of service years for retiring military and police personnel—provided they are medically certified fit—arguing that their expertise is indispensable at a time when national security is under severe strain.
“New recruits will require extensive training and time to gain experience,Meanwhile, we have seasoned hands whose skills and knowledge can still be harnessed. The Public Service Rules allow for this extension, and we can consider an additional two to five years for fit and capable officers.”he noted.
The lawmaker further pushed for the establishment of Special Courts or Tribunals to handle terrorism and banditry-related cases. He recommended that investigations, trials, and convictions be conducted within a six-month window to ensure swift justice and send a strong message to criminal elements.
Hon. Raji also urged the House to accelerate constitutional amendments to make state police a reality and called for stronger integration of local governments into Nigeria’s security structure. Citing successful community-based security models from Lagos, he stressed their effectiveness in tackling local crimes and aiding prosecution.
Responding to Raji’s presentation, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu praised the recommendations as “thought-provoking,” particularly the suggestion to re-engage retired officers whose experience the nation cannot afford to waste.
Kalu said the idea could lead to the creation of a special, highly trained force led by experienced officers who left the service due to promotions or political appointments.“It is a very stimulating suggestion,We will dissect it further and reflect it appropriately in our resolutions.”he said.
The House is expected to develop concrete actions based on these proposals as Nigeria presses forward in the fight against insecurity.
