Dankwambo hails Chess players after podium finish in Zimbabwe

The President of the Chess Federation of Nigeria (CFN), Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, has congratulated Team Nigeria on its sterling performance at the African Youth Chess Championship, (AYCC) concluded over the weekend in Harare, Zimbabwe.

He described the championship as just the beginning of greater things to come for Team Nigeria.

Senator Dankwambo in a statement made available to our correspondent from Harare heaped encomiums on the athletes whom he described as the future golden generation for demonstrating the true character and never say die spirit Nigeria is renowned.

Senator Dankwambo gave assurance that the Federation will focus on the athletes, kept them together while early preparations for meets and other tournament for year 2026 had been ingrained in the federation’s calendar.

Three out of six Team Nigerian players finished on the podium as the AYCC.

Nigeria was represented in five categories
U 10 (Boys & Girls)
U 12 (Boy & Girls)
U 18 (Girls)
Chiamaka Michelle Nwankwo (Under 12) won gold in her category.
While, Deborah Quickpen , one of the country’s brightest players won silver in the U-18 category.
Rising star, Adaeze Zita Agusion won bronze in the U-10 category.

A total of 15 countries participated in the African Youth Chess Championship which got underway on December 7th in Harare.

The victorious team is expected back in the country today.

4th African Youth Games: Nigeria Beats Table Tennis Powerhouse Egypt, to Win Mixed Team Gold

Nigeria has claimed a prestigious gold medal in table tennis at the 4th African Youth Games after defeating continental powerhouse Egypt to emerge champions in the mixed team event.


The Nigerian mixed team, represented by Matthew Fabunmi and Ojo Favour, delivered a composed and dominant performance in the final, overcoming Egypt by a convincing 2–0 scoreline to secure the gold medal and confirm Nigeria’s growing strength in youth table tennis.


Nigeria’s journey to the top of the podium was marked by a series of impressive victories. 
The team first defeated Tunisia in the quarters to book a place in the semifinals before producing a spirited display to overcome Algeria in a tense and hard-fought semifinal encounter.


The gold medal ceremony added further significance to the achievement, as the Nigerian team was presented with their medals by Engr. Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).


This triumph against one of Africa’s traditional table tennis giants highlights the promise of Nigeria’s young athletes and reinforces the country’s commitment to excellence at the continental stage.
