Joel Ajayi
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has praised former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Chief Sunday Dare, for putting in place policies that continue to drive growth and reforms in Nigeria’s sports sector.
Olopade gave the commendation in Abuja during a media briefing held alongside the maiden meeting of the National Intermediate Games, scheduled for Lagos from August 1 to 15, 2026.
He said the National Sports Commission remains committed to transforming the sector through strategic reforms, increased investment, improved athlete welfare, and modern sports infrastructure.
Olopade also commended Bola Ahmed Tinubu for providing the political will and support needed to reposition Nigerian sports. According to him, the President has shown clear determination to return the country to the top level of global sports competition.
“Without the support of Mr. President, we would not have achieved the progress we are seeing today,” he said.
He further applauded NSC staff for sustaining and implementing many reforms introduced during Dare’s tenure, noting that continuity has been key to current successes.
Olopade added that sports is now being repositioned beyond competition into a thriving economic sector capable of creating jobs and business opportunities across Nigeria.
