Joel Ajayi
The zonal qualifiers of the 2026 FirstBank/Samuel Okwaraji Foundation U16 Inter-Secondary Schools Football Tournament have commenced, with young footballers competing across Abuja, Kano, Lagos and Owerri.
In Abuja, the North-Central zone is hosting its qualifiers at Sunrise Sports City, where six secondary schools are battling for places in the next stage of the competition.
The participating schools have been drawn into three groups of two teams each, setting up a series of decisive encounters.
Government Secondary School, Mabushi, will take on Spate Ajele Community Secondary School, Ilorin, in the Group A fixture scheduled for September 20.
Group B will see Holy Trinity College, Lokoja, face Hill Top Model School, Minna, while Government Secondary School, Lafia, will confront St. John College, Jos, in the Group C encounter.
With only two teams in each group, the three group winners will progress automatically to the semi-finals. The best-performing runner-up will complete the last-four lineup.
The Abuja qualifiers are expected to provide an important platform for young players from the North-Central region to display their abilities while competing for a place in the later stages of the tournament.
The nationwide zonal programme is also taking place in Kano, Lagos and Owerri as organisers continue their drive to discover and promote promising secondary-school football talents.
