The President of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply Management of Nigeria (CIPSMN), Alhaji Sikiru Balogun, has charged newly inducted members of the institute to use their professional knowledge and skills to add value to Nigeria’s procurement system and contribute to national development.

Atanda gave the charge on Friday in Abuja while speaking at the 2026 induction ceremony of 358 new graduates and members of the institute, including professionals from the military and other sectors.

He said the induction marked an important stage in the professional development of the new members, who had undergone the institute’s training and other required processes to equip them with the knowledge and competence needed to practise procurement professionally.

According to him, procurement professionals have a critical role to play in ensuring transparency, accountability and value for money in both the public and private sectors.

He urged the inductees to uphold the highest standards of professional integrity and ensure that their decisions and actions were guided by the ethics, rules and regulations governing the profession.

“Be ready for transparency and accountability in your job. We are there for the economy of the nation. You are expected to give value for money,” he said.

The CIPSMN president stressed that procurement had moved beyond routine purchasing to become a strategic function requiring proper planning, effective spend management and professional expertise.

He therefore urged the new members to see themselves as strategic professionals capable of contributing to better resource management and improved service delivery.

Also speaking, the North-Central Coordinator ‎of the institute, Dr Abdul Mamman, who is a fellow of the institute, said the organisation had continued to train and induct professionals to address challenges confronting procurement practice in Nigeria.

He said procurement professionals must understand the dynamics of spend management and the legal and regulatory framework guiding procurement and supply chain management in the country.

According to him, the institute’s training equips members with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to function effectively in public and private sector organisations.

He noted that procurement cuts across several professional fields, including accounting, engineering, supply chain management and other disciplines, stressing that effective procurement requires professionals with adequate knowledge, competence and practical exposure.

He added that the institute had expanded its focus to cover public, private and defence procurement, given the enormous financial resources committed to procurement activities across these sectors.

The North-Central coordinator said effective procurement was essential to ensuring that public resources translated into tangible benefits for citizens.

He explained that professionals must understand and comply with government procurement laws, organisational policies and established procedures to promote transparency and accountability.

He also disclosed that the institute had engaged relevant authorities on efforts to strengthen the legal framework for procurement and supply chain management in Nigeria, noting that the profession must continue to align with global best practices.

He urged the new inductees to abide by the institute’s code of ethics and professional standards, stressing that procurement practitioners must be prepared to take responsibility for their actions and decisions.

He said the institute’s membership requirements were designed to ensure that only qualified persons with relevant educational backgrounds and requisite credentials were admitted into the profession.

One of the newly inducted members, Mr Victor Gabriel, said the training had equipped him with the knowledge needed to contribute to improving procurement practices in Nigeria.

Gabriel, who works with a state revenue service, said he would apply the lessons acquired during the training to ensure that procurement activities in his organisation were carried out in accordance with the law.

He noted that procurement was indispensable to virtually every organisation and warned that failure to comply with established procurement laws and procedures could create opportunities for corruption and other irregularities.

He said the new inductees had a responsibility to promote sustainable procurement practices and ensure that procurement policies were properly implemented in their respective organisations.

Gabriel expressed confidence that the new members would use their professional training to strengthen procurement processes and contribute to the development of the country.

He said: “As new inductees, we are expected to carry out the new programmes and apply what we have learnt to bring sustainability into procurement in Nigeria, whether in the public or private sector.”

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honorable Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has called on Nigerians to use the occasion of the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary to renew their faith in Nigeria, strengthen national unity and recommit themselves to building a more inclusive and prosperous country.

In her 66th Independence Day message, Hon. Omidiran described October 1 as more than a celebration of freedom, saying the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey, acknowledge its progress and challenges, and renew the collective determination to build a nation where every citizen has a sense of belonging.

According to the FCC Executive Chairman, the Federal Character Principle remains particularly important to the quest for national cohesion because equitable representation promotes a sense of ownership and confidence in the Nigerian project.

“Nigeria is a nation of great diversity and
enormous potential. Our responsibility is to ensure that this diversity becomes a bridge that connects us rather than a barrier that separates us. Every Nigerian deserves to feel that he or she belongs to this country and has a role to play in its development,” Omidiran said.

The FCC boss called on government institutions at all levels to remain committed to fairness, equity, accountability and inclusive governance, while urging citizens to support efforts aimed at strengthening national institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence.

“We must not lose faith in Nigeria. The challenges before us are real, but so are the opportunities and the enormous human and natural resources available to us. Every citizen has a responsibility to contribute his or her own quota to building the Nigeria we desire,” she stated.

The FCC Executive Chairman also urged young Nigerians to remain committed to acquiring knowledge and skills, entrepreneurship, innovation, sports and other productive ventures, describing the youth as critical stakeholders in the country’s future.

“As we celebrate 66 years of independence, let us remember that the Nigeria we want cannot be built by government alone. It requires the commitment of all of us – leaders and citizens, young and old, from every part of the federation. Together, we can build a Nigeria where justice, fairness, opportunity and peace are available to all,” she said.

Omidiran reaffirmed the FCC’s commitment to the effective discharge of its constitutional mandate and to supporting efforts that promote equitable representation and inclusive national development across the federation.

The former lawmaker wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary, praying for continued peace, stability, prosperity and progress for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Our differences should never be greater than our common identity as Nigerians. Let us continue to choose unity over division, service over self-interest and hope over despair. The Nigeria of our dreams is possible if we all play our part,” Omidiran said.

“On behalf of the Federal Character Commission, I congratulate all Nigerians on this 66th Independence Anniversary. May this occasion renew our patriotism, strengthen our unity and inspire us to work together for a stronger, more equitable and prosperous Nigeria. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she added.
