NSC, International Volleyball Federation Enter Landmark Partnership To Transform Volleyball In Nigeria

Published

on

The National Sports Commission has recorded a major breakthrough for the development of volleyball in Nigeria following a milestone meeting in Dakar, Senegal with the International Volleyball Federation, the world governing body for the sport.

The meeting, which was held in a spirit of mutual respect and shared ambition, culminated in a firm commitment from the FIVB to provide comprehensive technical support, funding, and coaching expertise to fast-track the growth of both Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball in Nigeria.

The partnership is strategically designed to strengthen the entire volleyball ecosystem in the country, from grassroots participation and talent identification to elite performance, coaching education, refereeing standards, and competition structure.

This development comes at a historic moment for Nigerian volleyball. Recall that the Nigeria Beach Volleyball Team qualified for the Olympic Games for the first time in the country’s history, a landmark achievement that not only captured national attention but also demonstrated Nigeria’s enormous potential on the world stage. The FIVB’s intervention is therefore timely, as it will build on that momentum and provide the structured support needed to sustain and surpass that success.

Speaking after the meeting, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, in his usual approach of purposeful engagement and results-driven leadership, expressed profound appreciation to the FIVB for recognizing Nigeria as one of the greatest in the game.

“The meeting is quite productive, what a fruitful deliberation with the International Volleyball Federation. It gladdens my heart to know that international volleyball has seen Nigeria as one of the greatest in the game. They have offered technical support, funding, coaching and other resources that can aid the development of volleyball in Nigeria,” he said.

“Recall that Nigeria has qualified for the Olympics in Los Angeles and with this, we will keep discovering talent, we will not relent in our efforts.”

The Director General assured the Federation of a robust, transparent, and long-term relationship anchored on accountability, excellence, and shared development goals. He noted that the Commission is committed to providing the enabling environment, institutional support, and political will required to ensure that the partnership delivers tangible results for athletes, coaches, and the entire volleyball family.

He further emphasized that the NSC views volleyball as one of the strategic sports with the capacity to create jobs, inspire the youth, promote national unity, and project Nigeria positively to the world. The collaboration with the FIVB, he said, aligns perfectly with the Commission’s vision of repositioning Nigerian sports for sustainable development.

The meeting also had in attendance Engineer Abu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), and Mr. Tunde Popoola, Secretary General of the NOC, alongside the President of the International Volleyball Federation.

The FIVB, on its part, reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the NSC and the Nigeria Volleyball Federation to implement development programmes that will raise the technical standard of the game, improve the quality of local leagues, and prepare Nigerian teams for continental and global competitions.

This partnership ushers in a new era for Nigerian volleyball, defined by modern training methods, improved funding opportunities, world-class coaching, increased grassroots participation, and greater success at international championships, including future Olympic Games.

The National Sports Commission remains committed to leveraging international partnerships to transform sports in Nigeria and to ensure that no sport is left behind in the country’s sporting renaissance.
