Abuja Set To  Hosts OSOM GAMES

After several postponements occasioned by the covid-19  pandemic,  the city of Abuja is finally set to host the OSOM Games from the 20th- 24th January 2021 with a record 15 events to be competed for by members of the Armed Forces and the paramilitary.

According to a statement by the Director of Grassroots  Development of the  Federal Ministry of  Youth and Sports Development  Dr. Ademola Are” The Minister of Youth and Sports Development  Mr. Sunday Dare has approved the staging of the OSOM Games in Abuja over a four day period with 15 events to be competed for. Events to be competed for include Athletics, Swimming,  Taekwondo,  Weightlifting,  Tug of War, Beach  Volleyball, Boxing, Chess, Squash, Scrabble. Others are  Golf, Tennis, Shooting, Table Tennis,  and Badminton”.

While Beach Volleyball will take place at the  Jabi Lake,  Boxing will hold at Old Parade Ground, Area 10,  Chess at  Media Centre, Package A, Golf to tee off at  TYB International Golf Resorts and Country Club, Shehu Yar Adua Barracks, Asokoro,  Scrabble players will have a field day at Abuja VIP Lounge, Package A. as The  Shooting  Range, Package B will come alive playing host to shooting.

Squash Court, Package B host the Squash event, Swimming takes place at the Pool  of Package BTable Tennis Indoor Sports Hall, Package B. Others are; Taekwondo  at Velodrome, Package A, Tennis  at Tennis Court, Package B

It would be Tug of War at the Training Pitch, Package A, With Weightlifters trying their strength at the Gymnasium, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National stadium.

The statement further said the OSOM GAMES  is being organized to foster peace, unity, and sports  Development among members of the Armed forces Military and the paramilitary in the country.

It is also geared towards the discovery of hidden, established talents for future podium success for the country.

The event was earlier scheduled to hold late last year in Kaduna but was postponed due to logistics reasons.

NSC DG Olopade Meets NSC Directors, Calls for Scientific Approach to Sports Federation Activities

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has reiterated the new transformative vision of the Commission during his meeting with the Directors and Heads of Departments of the Commission.


The interactive sessions allowed senior officials to introduce themselves to the new DG, who emphasized the importance of strategic, standardized and scientific approach to the Commission’s operations, including the conduct of Sports Federation Elections.


In his remarks, Olopade stressed the need for reforms that would attract top administrators to vie for leadership roles within Nigeria’s Sports Federations.
“There is no way we can’t be looking at having top industry CEOs on board in our Sports Federations,” he stated.


The DG also highlighted the Commission’s mandate to elevate the Corporate image of various Sports in Nigeria. 


He reemphasized the NSC’s commitment to reviving key initiatives such as the National Sports Industry Policy and the 10-Year Football Master Plan.


“The Chairman and myself strongly believe we need to have a different approach to our Federation Elections,” he noted. 


“This is why the emphasis of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a balanced approach to both sports consumption and sports production.”


The meeting reflects the new direction of the NSC, with Olopade pledging to champion and support policies that will foster professionalism and sustainable development across Nigeria’s sports landscape.
