Adebayo, Agbo Win 2024 IBB Golf Club Captain, Lady Captain Inaugural Tourney

In this year edition in other to add value to the game, the Captain and ladies captain tourneys played together unlike previous years where the tournament played separate.


It was a joyous moment for Mr Shola Adebayo and Grace Agbo on Sunday in Abuja when emerged winners of the 2024 Captain’s and Lady Captain Inaugural tournament at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.


Adebayo who played off handicap 13 with a gross score of 76 and overall best net of 63 to emerge champion, beating the field of over 200 golfers.


While Agbo who played handicap 9 emerged winner putting a gross score of 84 and 75 net.
The tournament organized to officially usher in Ibrahim Babayo and Julie Donli as the 27th captain and Lady Captain of the prestigious golf club.


An exciting 3 days tournament which teed-off on Friday ended on Sundays night with a dinner and presentation of prizes to deserved winners in the various categories at the prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.


While Speaking IBB Captain Ibrahim Babayo who settled for the 1st runner up position in the category after he played off handicap 21 with a gross score of 90 and 69 net expressed satisfaction and promised to improve in every are of the course.


According to him, It’s a sort of tradition where the new executive is elected. There is this tournament that heralds the new exco and it call captain’s inaugural tourney.


Talking about his plan,  Babayo said: “We are bringing in serious reform. We are doing standard operating procedures, we are doing staff enhancement and above all, the main thing that we promise is that we are going to really, really rejuvenate the course to its international standard.


“This involves the clubhouse and the course itself, the playing field itself. So if you go around, you will see some projects already being started and there are many more to come. 
“We have zero tolerance for plastic waste on the course. You can go around and see for yourself”.


In her remarked, IBB Lady Captain, Dame Julie Donli, who in her usual joyous mood, explained that exco have already swung the action by supporting and assisting the ladies.
“As lady Captain, first of all, the theme for the year is ladies supporting ladies. We’ve been doing a lot of support towards ladies, the female caddies are being supported by the ladies section.


“The ladies committee also built a toilet to support ladies more. We also have children’s projects like the children’s clinic, which was concluded not too long ago. We also just recently concluded the junior open, which is made of children, young children as well we have a lot in stock”.


However, the elated Adebayo who emerged winner  expressed: what inspired me was the challenges encountered on the course  was was fierce.


Speaking also was the Omon Isemede, the Social Secretary, Ladies Golf Section, said the competition wouldn’t have been a success without the Captain lady Captain effort and their tremendous initiative to steer the ship of the course. She however wish the new exco the best.

Other winner includes; Godwin Okoko who won the professional category prize after he played 68 gross to beat runner up Kamalu Bako on countback.


Emmanuel Edoka emerged winner of the best gross men after playing off handicap 7 with a gross score of 82.


In the Auxiliary award category, Rachael Danjuma won the prize for the longest drive with a distance of 239 metres, while Kamalu Bako won the men’s category with a distance of 292 metres.


Amina Wilfred won the prize for nearest to the pin ladies with a distance of 7 ft., while Joseph Shuiabu won the prize in the men’s category with a distance of 1.99 ft.

…Says It Will Boost Nigeria’s Economy

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has commended the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, for initiating the NFF-FIFA Players’ Hostel and new training pitches, describing it as a transformational project that will boost Nigeria’s economy.


Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, Speaker Abbas praised the initiative and pledged the National Assembly’s full support.


 “This is a noble project, and the National Assembly will give it full support. I congratulate the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation, and I thank FIFA for agreeing to fund this project,” he stated while cutting the ceremonial tape.


He also assured the House of Representatives’ support for the visionary leadership of Engineer Ibrahim Musa Gusau and the NFF in other key areas where assistance is required.

Leading the FIFA delegation, Gelson Fernandes (Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer/Regional Director, Africa) reiterated FIFA’s commitment to funding the project, emphasizing that infrastructure development has been a priority since the tenure of President Gianni Infantino began.

Expressing his excitement, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau stated that the hostel and training pitches will serve all Nigerian national teams, leagues, and academies.


“Indeed, my joy knows no bounds. From the day my Executive Committee and I were sworn into office in Benin City on Friday, 30th September 2022, I was determined to push this project forward as a legacy for Nigerian football.
“For sustained success, we must provide a conducive environment, infrastructure, equipment, and support systems that enable players and officials to perform at their best.

“Building a players’ hostel and having new training pitches will not only enhance team management but also reduce costs, allowing us to invest more in grassroots development programs.”
Several dignitaries present at the event applauded Gusau’s leadership, determination, and commitment to football development in Nigeria.


The event was well attended by local and international stakeholders, including sports enthusiasts, who witnessed the groundbreaking ceremony of the NFF-FIFA Players’ Hostel and Training Pitches.

In addition to the hostel, the project includes:Two new training pitches (one synthetic and one natural grass). Reconstruction of the existing synthetic pitch.


Also, Spectators’ sitting terraces with 1,838 seats.Two dressing rooms for players, each accommodating 27 players.Two dressing rooms for officials.

The construction is expected to last 24 months and is fully funded by FIFA under its FIFA Forward 3.0 programme.
