Bash Ali won’t give up on Guinness World Record Boxing Title
Former World Boxing Federation (WBF) cruiserweight champion, Bashiru Ali, popularly known as Bash Ali, has expressed his determination not to give up on his Guinness World Record (GWR) which will make him the oldest boxer in history to fight and defend his title.
Ali, 67, whose last fight was against Tony Booth in 2004, in a release he personally signed and titled “Bash Ali: The Dream Waiting To Happen Can Never Be Killed”, and made available to Tribune Sports, said he would never give up on his dreams but rather make sure that the fight becomes a reality.
Ali, who has had more than 80 fights with 46 knockouts (KOs) under his belt, described himself as an extraordinary man who is set to “accomplish my dream and continue to fight till I am 70 years old, retire young and healthy with a lot of money.”
He said if were to be a white man, his dream and ambition would have seen the light of the day and would have been supported without a second thought in order to rewrite boxing history.
“Dreams, they say hardly die. It is not for fun that 17 years ago, African Boxing Ambassador, Nigeria’s Bashiru Lawrence Ali’s (OON) dream of becoming the Guinness World Record Boxing Champion refused to die. Many have given up on their dreams or even died with it, however, for Bash Ali, the man has remained on course until the mark is made.
“There are many doubting Thomases, who have dismissed this dream with a wave of the hand, wondering if he wants to kill himself in the adventure. Those who want to listen to themselves speak on the initiative, would prefer he be stopped in his tracks.
“Being a man of conviction that Bash is, I know that many people give up on their dreams and die with it but I am an extraordinary man. I will accomplish my dream and continue to fight till I am 70 years old, retire young and healthy with a lot of money, and then go into politics and become the President of Nigeria.
“If Bash Ali were to be a white man living in the West, his dream and ambition would have seen the light of the day, despite the assertion of those against the dream. Older persons desirous of fulfilling an ambition in the west and other saner climes would have been supported without a second thought in order to rewrite boxing history,” the statement read in part.

NTF President Hails NSC as Alegu Begins World Junior Taekwondo Medal Hunt
Joel Ajayi
President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Grand Master Tayo Popoola, has commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its support in ensuring Nigeria’s rising star, Solomon Alegu, competes at the World Junior Taekwondo Championship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Speaking through the NTF media team, Popoola praised the Commission’s dynamic and resourceful leadership, noting that its proactive approach is helping to reposition sports in the country.
“There is a new drive in our sports, and it is a result of intelligent and proactive leadership that has taken Nigerian sports to the next level,” she said.
She highlighted that Alegu’s journey to the global stage was made possible through the Commission’s initiative, which earlier facilitated his participation at the Youth Games in Angola in December last year.
“It was through the National Sports Commission programme that took Solomon to the Youth Games in Angola, and today he has the opportunity to compete at the World Junior Championship,” she added.
Popoola further revealed that the federation received encouragement and strong backing from the Commission as Alegu and his coach prepared for the championship.
“We reached out to them as our athlete and coach prepared for this World Junior Taekwondo Championship, and we got their support.
This serves as great inspiration to us as a federation,” she stated.
Expressing confidence in the young athlete, Popoola recalled Alegu’s impressive performance at the African Junior Championships in Luanda, Angola, where he secured a bronze medal in the -59kg category.
“We believe in his capacity, which is why he was selected to compete and showcase the never-say-die spirit of Nigeria,” she said.
She also noted that it has been a while since Nigeria last competed at this level, but expressed optimism about Alegu’s chances.
“It’s been a long time since we participated at this level, but I can assure you that Solomon will make a strong impact from his very first fight,” she added.
Solomon Alegu’s quest for a podium finish in the -59kg category at the World Junior Taekwondo Championship in Uzbekistan begins tomorrow, as he faces Yeun Awenm of the Netherlands. The competition is scheduled to run through Friday, April 17, 2026.
