Don’t reject Corps Members, FG Urge Employers

Joel Ajayi
The Federal Capital Territory Administration has appealed to all Corps employers not to reject any Corps Member posted to serve in their establishment, but rather provide enabling environments that would enable them perform their statutory responsibilities to their fatherland.
The Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Abuja, Mr Olusade Adesola, stated this today at the closing Ceremony of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream One Orientation Course held at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
He said every stakeholder must make the service year very memorable for all Corps Members.
Olusade whose address was read by the the Acting Mandate Secretary, FCT Social Development Secretariat, Mrs Justina Pawa appealed to the Corps Members to contribute their quota to national development by promoting the spirit of oneness, mutual co-existence, national unity and cohesion; and above all, peace and harmony in the country.
He lauded NYSC Management and other critical stakeholders for theirinvaluable contributions in mentoring Corps Members for leadership roles and self empowerment through its SAED programme.
“I urge Organized Private Sector (OPS), to open up their doors to accept Corps Members that will be posted to them to undergo the one-year compulsory service.
It is expected that no Company and Organization operating within the shores of Nigeria should flagrantly reject any Corps Member that is officially posted to them. As a mark of patriotism and responsibility to national development, the Organized Private Sector should consider the NYSC Scheme as an opportunity to give back to the society as a platform to demonstrate its Corporate Social Responsibility”, Olusade said.
He advised the Corps Members to take advantage of the Community Development Service with diligence, so as to make impact in their various host communities in a bid to create indelible imprints in the minds of the people of the various communities they are posted to, adding that excellence has a way of attracting recognition and reward.
The Permanent Secretary stated further that theFCT administration would not tolerate criminality, such asdrug abuse and other nefarious activities that are likely to put the lives of residents and their properties in danger.
He said the FCT Administration would continue to prioritize the welfare and as well as creating a befitting environment for Corps Members to operate.
In her address, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, Mrs Winifred Shopeka urged the 3,291 Corps Members to accept their postings in good faith and desist from acts of inducing rejections.
She also advised them to engage in post-camp training of Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme and perfect the vocational skills training they started in camp.
“NYSC has zero tolerance for night travels as this will only increase the risk of accident, but also make rescue difficult.
You are therefore advised to cut short your trips from six o’ clock in the evening and pass the night at NYSC lodges, military barracks and other safe location”, Shopeka said.
The NYSC Director General, Brigadier General Yusha’u Dogara Ahmed accompanied by the Director, Special Duties, Alhaji Musa Abubakar and Director, Press and Public Relations Mr Eddy Megwa also witnessed the ceremony alongside other dignitaries.

Nigeria’s Historic Bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games: A Call for National and Global Support

Joel Ajayi
Nigeria is poised to make history as it seeks to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, a monumental opportunity that promises to transform the nation’s economy, infrastructure, and global standing.
More than a sporting spectacle, the Games would serve as a catalyst for development across multiple sectors, leaving behind a legacy of national pride and sustainable growth.
The benefits of hosting the Games extend far beyond the sports arena. Nigeria stands to gain both empirical and non-empirical advantages, with direct, indirect, and induced impacts that will touch every corner of society. Infrastructural development will take center stage, with new facilities such as indoor sports halls, conference centers, and improved road networks reshaping urban landscapes while strengthening the nation’s capacity to host future international events.
Economic growth is another significant dividend. Over 10,000 jobs are expected to be created, spanning construction, facility management, event planning, and tourism services.
The hospitality industry will undergo major improvements as hotels and resorts are upgraded to meet international standards, while local restaurants, lounges, and tourist attractions will see a surge in patronage from international visitors. Small and medium enterprises, particularly in the transport, finance, and food service sectors, will become some of the greatest beneficiaries, as the Games generate new demand and expand opportunities for local businesses.
The Commonwealth Games will also accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s sports industry.
Investments in training facilities, coaching, and talent development will inspire a new generation of athletes, ensuring long-term benefits that extend beyond 2030, a major focus of the President Bola Tinubu administration.
At the same time, the process of preparing for the Games will create opportunities for Nigerians to learn new crafts, acquire technical skills, and engage in global-standard event management, thereby strengthening human capacity and innovation across industries.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission, and Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General, have been widely recognized for their tireless and visionary leadership in repositioning Nigeria’s sporting sector.
Their commitment to facilitating infrastructural development and strengthening grassroots sports development has laid the foundation for Nigeria’s bold bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Under their leadership, the NSC is fostering strategic partnerships and driving innovation in sports administration, they have demonstrated the nation’s readiness to stage an event of such global magnitude.
Beyond the tangible gains, the hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games carries profound symbolic value. It would be a moment of unity and pride, a chance for Nigeria to showcase its cultural richness, resilience, and excellence to the world.
As a centenary edition, the Games would stand as a historic milestone not just for the Commonwealth but for Nigeria itself, cementing its place on the global stage as a capable, ambitious, and forward-looking nation.
The gains from hosting the Commonwealth Games can never be undermined or overemphasized. This is Nigeria’s time to step forward and show the world our resilience, and excellence. We call on every Nigerian, across sectors and communities, to support this noble aspiration.
Nigeria’s pursuit of the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a vision for transformation, a blueprint for national development, and a legacy project that will inspire generations to come.
