Embattled Siasia Appeal Get October 6th As New Date

Former Super Eagles Coach Samson Siasia get October 6, 2020, as a date for his appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) after FIFA ban,

The appeal was initially billed for March 19, 2020, but it has now been adjourned due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The 51-year-old was banned for life from football activities after World Football governing body (FIFA) found him guilty taking bribes to manipulate matches.

The former Super Eagles striker was also fined CHF50,000 (£42,000) for breaching FIFA’s code of ethics.

In a letter to Siasia on Monday from CAS with registration number: CAS 2019/A/6439 Samson Siasia v. FIFA requested that: “Samson Siasia shall pay the total amount of CHF 100’000 (One hundred thousand Swiss francs) to the CAS bank account.

“The estimate includes the CAS administrative costs and the costs and fees if the Panel. Accordingly, the first advance of costs in the arbitration CAS 2019/A/6439 Samson Siasia v FIFA shall be fixed at CHF 100’000 (One hundred thousand Swiss francs.)

“If a party fails to pay its share, another may substitute for it, in case of nonpayment within the time limit fixed by CAS, the request/appeal shall be deemed withdrawn and the CAS shall terminate the arbitration, this provision applies mutatis mutandis to any counterclaims.

It also clarified that: “FIFA does not pay any arbitration cost in advance when it acts as Respondent in a procedure before CAS, which is admissible to CAS pursuant to Article R 64.2 of the Code.”

FIFA did not specify when Siasia’s alleged violations occurred but said in a statement: “The adjudicatory chamber of the independent ethics committee has found Mr. Samson Siasia, a former official of the Nigeria Football Federation, guilty of having accepted that he would receive bribes in relation to the manipulation of matches in violation of the FIFA code of ethics.

“The formal ethics proceedings against Mr. Siasia were initiated on February 11, 2019, and stem from an extensive investigation into matches Mr. Wilson Raj Perumal attempted to manipulate for betting purposes.”

Samson Siasia won 51 caps with the Super Eagles between 1984 -1999 scoring 16 goals before headling the U20, U23, and the Super Eagles of Nigeria as the head coach.

NSC DG Olopade Meets NSC Directors, Calls for Scientific Approach to Sports Federation Activities

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, has reiterated the new transformative vision of the Commission during his meeting with the Directors and Heads of Departments of the Commission.


The interactive sessions allowed senior officials to introduce themselves to the new DG, who emphasized the importance of strategic, standardized and scientific approach to the Commission’s operations, including the conduct of Sports Federation Elections.


In his remarks, Olopade stressed the need for reforms that would attract top administrators to vie for leadership roles within Nigeria’s Sports Federations.
“There is no way we can’t be looking at having top industry CEOs on board in our Sports Federations,” he stated.


The DG also highlighted the Commission’s mandate to elevate the Corporate image of various Sports in Nigeria. 


He reemphasized the NSC’s commitment to reviving key initiatives such as the National Sports Industry Policy and the 10-Year Football Master Plan.


“The Chairman and myself strongly believe we need to have a different approach to our Federation Elections,” he noted. 


“This is why the emphasis of the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a balanced approach to both sports consumption and sports production.”


The meeting reflects the new direction of the NSC, with Olopade pledging to champion and support policies that will foster professionalism and sustainable development across Nigeria’s sports landscape.
