Football fans are in for a treat this Saturday at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja, as the Barca Legends take on the African Legends in the much-anticipated Battle of the Legends — a thrilling encounter organized by the ATOM Foundation.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the event, Barca Legends captain Gaizka Mendieta promised fans an exciting and entertaining display of football.
“We are looking forward to a fantastic game. It’s always special to be back on the pitch, especially playing in front of passionate Nigerian fans,” Mendieta said.
On his part, Dele Aiyenugba, representing the African Legends, assured that his team is ready for the challenge. “We’re here to have fun and give the fans something to remember. It’s going to be a great day of football and camaraderie,” he stated.
The Battle of the Legends, now in its second edition, is not just about football but also about impact.
The ATOM Foundation has dedicated this year’s edition to promoting its social cause — “Keep Her Learning”, an initiative focused on menstrual health education and hygiene for the girl child.
Speaking on behalf of ATOM, Dr. Zainab Mohammed, a medical consultant, highlighted the Foundation’s goal of reaching 20,000 schoolgirls aged 10 to 18 with menstrual health education and free sanitary products.
“Many girls in rural areas suffer from period poverty, lacking access to sanitary materials and clean water. This leads to stigma and missed school days. Our mission is to ensure that no girl misses school or feels ashamed because of her menstruation,” she explained.
Dr. Mohammed added that the Foundation will identify 50 public schools in underserved communities, provide sanitary kits, and train teachers and community health workers to support menstrual hygiene management. The project will also establish “Keep Her Learning” clubs in schools, creating safe spaces for girls to access support and information.
Saturday’s game will not only bring together football greats from Europe and Africa but will also unite fans behind a meaningful cause — using the power of sports to uplift and empower the girl child.
With excitement building and legends ready to thrill, Abuja is set for a fantastic football Saturday filled with fun, goals, and purpose.
