HFN President Promises Bigger, Better Edition of Super Hockey League

The President of the Hockey Federation of Nigeria (HFN), Engr. Obadiah Simon Nkom, has assured stakeholders and fans of a more exciting and innovative edition of the 2025 Hockey Super League.

Speaking to the media on Monday in Abuja, Nkom highlighted the strides the federation is making to develop the sport across the country, with the Super League being one of its flagship competitions.

“The Super League is a premier domestic tournament that brings together the top male and female hockey teams from across Nigeria,” Nkom said. “It’s a prestigious platform where elite teams compete for national honours, and it also serves as a qualifier for the Africa Club Championship.

Nkom noted that while the Super League has grown in reputation over the years, the 2025 edition will come with renewed energy and innovations aimed at raising its standards.

“We are learning from past editions, correcting our mistakes, and introducing new ideas to make this year’s tournament one of the best we’ve ever had. Hockey in Nigeria is growing, and this league is central to that growth,” he explained.

Although initially scheduled to hold next month, the 2025 Super League has been rescheduled to September to avoid a clash with the National Youth Games.

“The Youth Games will end in late September, and we had to make adjustments to ensure we don’t compromise the quality of either event. Despite the shift, our board and organizing team are fully prepared. We remain committed to delivering a top-tier competition.”

Nkom emphasized that the federation takes the Super League very seriously, not just as a competition but as a strategic tool for talent development and international representation.

“We want a tournament that will reflect the progress of Nigerian hockey, and we are confident this year’s edition will do just that,” he added.

Ibadan is buzzing with excitement as the Unique Football Academy Scouting Program kicks off, bringing together top European football clubs and talented young Nigerian players.

The four-day program, which commenced on Monday, features a delegation of four directors from prominent European teams, including two from Kosovo and one from India, led by renowned football agent Diego Martins from Portugal.

The scouting program aims to identify and select outstanding players who will be given opportunities to showcase their skills in Europe.

Successful players will be offered the chance to take their careers to the next level, with the organizers assuring them of opportunities abroad.

According to the Director of the program and founder of Unique Football Academy, Mr. Jelil Oladimeji, this is not the first time the academy has organized such an event.

“This is the 4th edition, and we are proud of the progress and impact we have made so far in terms of exposing our raw talent to the European market,” he said.

The program has already proven successful, with several players from previous editions going on to excel in European leagues. Some notable examples include Haruna Saleh with PAOK in Greece and Praisegod Emersons in Slovakia.

As the program continues, clubs are gearing up to exhibit their talents, and the future looks bright for Nigeria’s young football stars.
