The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has congratulated the Super Falcons on their strong start to the 2025 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they became the first team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

The nine-time African champions kicked off their Group B campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia, followed by a hard-fought 1-0 win against Botswana on Thursday. With two wins from two matches, the Super Falcons have confidently booked their place in the last eight.

Reacting to the team’s performance, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu, expressed pride in the squad and faith in their ability to reclaim the continental title last won in 2018.

“Slowly but surely, the best team in Africa is making its way back to the top,” said Hon. Amadu, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency. “Winning their first two games in such convincing fashion shows their focus, strength, and determination to reclaim the crown.”

He also reiterated the nation’s collective support behind the team’s campaign:

“The Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and over 180 million Nigerians are fully behind the Super Falcons. We are confident this team has what it takes to go all the way and bring the trophy home after a seven-year wait.”

The Super Falcons will play their final Group B match against Algeria on Sunday, July 13, 2025. While their quarterfinal opponent is yet to be determined, the knockout fixtures are scheduled for Friday and Saturday next week.

Hon. Amadu concluded by commending the team’s depth, talent, and fighting spirit, expressing optimism that the current squad will restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football.

The four-day program, which commenced on Monday, features a delegation of four directors from prominent European teams, including two from Kosovo and one from India, led by renowned football agent Diego Martins from Portugal.

The scouting program aims to identify and select outstanding players who will be given opportunities to showcase their skills in Europe.

Successful players will be offered the chance to take their careers to the next level, with the organizers assuring them of opportunities abroad.

According to the Director of the program and founder of Unique Football Academy, Mr. Jelil Oladimeji, this is not the first time the academy has organized such an event.

“This is the 4th edition, and we are proud of the progress and impact we have made so far in terms of exposing our raw talent to the European market,” he said.

The program has already proven successful, with several players from previous editions going on to excel in European leagues. Some notable examples include Haruna Saleh with PAOK in Greece and Praisegod Emersons in Slovakia.

As the program continues, clubs are gearing up to exhibit their talents, and the future looks bright for Nigeria’s young football stars.
