Inside the Suspension of Party Excos: Ebonyi National Democratic Coalition Gives Reasons

…Urges Nigerians to Disregard Purported Resignation Letters

Cyril Ogar

The Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Coalition in Ebonyi State, Prince Enyinnaya Alum Udensi, has urged members of the public to disregard the purported resignation letters circulated by some former party executives, describing them as a calculated attempt to cover up their suspension over allegations of gross misconduct and corrupt practices.

In a statement issued in Abakaliki by the State Chairman, Prince Alum, alongside the State Publicity Secretary, Sir Vitalis Nnajieze, on behalf of the State Executive Committee, the party disclosed that its national leadership is currently investigating a petition containing serious allegations against some former state executives.

According to the statement, the petition submitted to the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary accused the affected officials of gross misconduct, breach of the party’s constitution, anti-party activities, financial impropriety, forgery, and acts deemed prejudicial to the interests of the party.

Those named in the petition include the former State Secretary, Barr. Adum Solomon Chinedu; former Deputy Chairman, Comrade Idenyi Okechukwu; former Welfare Officer, Cyril Ajah; former Youth Leader, Anthony Nwofe; and Assistant Publicity Secretary, Rex Nwome.

The clarification followed widespread reports across print and social media suggesting that a wave of resignations had hit the Ebonyi State leadership of the party.

However, Prince Alum dismissed the reports, insisting that the affected former executives were officially suspended during an expanded State Executive Committee meeting held last weekend, pending the outcome of investigations by the party’s national leadership.

He said the purported resignations were merely an afterthought aimed at masking the disciplinary action already taken against them.

“The NDC in Ebonyi State, under my leadership and guidance, formally petitioned the aforementioned principal officers shortly after the primary elections over various offences and acts of gross misconduct,” Alum stated.

“These include financial misappropriation, extortion of aspirants, forgery of party documents, anti-party activities, and other serious violations which constitute breaches of the party’s constitution and conduct prejudicial to the interest of the party. As I speak, the National Working Committee is set to constitute a probe panel to thoroughly investigate these allegations.”

A copy of the petition made available to journalists stated in part:

“We hereby submit this petition against Barr. Adum Solomon Chinedu, Comrade Idenyi Okechukwu, Cyril Ajah, Anthony Nwofe, and Rex Nwome for acts which, in our considered view, amount to gross misconduct, constitutional violations, anti-party activities, and conduct capable of destabilizing the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Ebonyi State.”

The petition further alleged that the affected officials engaged in coordinated media campaigns aimed at discrediting the state leadership of the party.

It noted that through a purported vote of no confidence, media appearances, press interviews, and public statements, the suspended executives allegedly launched sustained attacks against the party’s leadership in the state.

The statement also accused them of making unsubstantiated allegations against respected party leaders, including Dr. Sam Egwu, Hon. Anayo Edwin, Hon. Linus Okorie, and Engr. Fidelis Nwankwo, without exhausting the party’s internal conflict resolution mechanisms.

According to the State Executive Committee, such actions have exposed the party to public ridicule, weakened confidence in its leadership, and created avoidable divisions among members.

The party leadership reaffirmed its commitment to due process, stressing that the ongoing investigation by the national body would ensure justice and accountability while preserving unity within the party.

Nigeria at 66: ‘We Must Not Lose Faith in Nigeria’ — FCC Boss Omidiran

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Honorable Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, has called on Nigerians to use the occasion of the nation’s 66th Independence Anniversary to renew their faith in Nigeria, strengthen national unity and recommit themselves to building a more inclusive and prosperous country.

In her 66th Independence Day message, Hon. Omidiran described October 1 as more than a celebration of freedom, saying the anniversary provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey, acknowledge its progress and challenges, and renew the collective determination to build a nation where every citizen has a sense of belonging.

According to the FCC Executive Chairman, the Federal Character Principle remains particularly important to the quest for national cohesion because equitable representation promotes a sense of ownership and confidence in the Nigerian project.

“Nigeria is a nation of great diversity and
enormous potential. Our responsibility is to ensure that this diversity becomes a bridge that connects us rather than a barrier that separates us. Every Nigerian deserves to feel that he or she belongs to this country and has a role to play in its development,” Omidiran said.

The FCC boss called on government institutions at all levels to remain committed to fairness, equity, accountability and inclusive governance, while urging citizens to support efforts aimed at strengthening national institutions and promoting peaceful coexistence.

“We must not lose faith in Nigeria. The challenges before us are real, but so are the opportunities and the enormous human and natural resources available to us. Every citizen has a responsibility to contribute his or her own quota to building the Nigeria we desire,” she stated.

The FCC Executive Chairman also urged young Nigerians to remain committed to acquiring knowledge and skills, entrepreneurship, innovation, sports and other productive ventures, describing the youth as critical stakeholders in the country’s future.

“As we celebrate 66 years of independence, let us remember that the Nigeria we want cannot be built by government alone. It requires the commitment of all of us – leaders and citizens, young and old, from every part of the federation. Together, we can build a Nigeria where justice, fairness, opportunity and peace are available to all,” she said.

Omidiran reaffirmed the FCC’s commitment to the effective discharge of its constitutional mandate and to supporting efforts that promote equitable representation and inclusive national development across the federation.

The former lawmaker wished Nigerians at home and abroad a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary, praying for continued peace, stability, prosperity and progress for the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Our differences should never be greater than our common identity as Nigerians. Let us continue to choose unity over division, service over self-interest and hope over despair. The Nigeria of our dreams is possible if we all play our part,” Omidiran said.

“On behalf of the Federal Character Commission, I congratulate all Nigerians on this 66th Independence Anniversary. May this occasion renew our patriotism, strengthen our unity and inspire us to work together for a stronger, more equitable and prosperous Nigeria. May God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” she added.
