Major General Taritimiye Gagariga says he is impressed by the display of the young players at the ongoing 2022 Kontagora Invitational Challenge in Nigeria state.

Maj Gen Gagariga who is the sponsor of the invitational challenge stated that the young players are contributing to the victory of their various teams while others are making meaningful progress.

He emphasized that the objective of the competition is to consolidate the grassroot volleyball which he started in 2021.

The board member, Nigeria Volleyball Federation said, “I am satisfied with the performances of the players; as you all know that the objective of the Kontagora Challenge is to consolidate the grassroot volleyball which we started last year.

“It has been revealing especially for the new teams that joined the challenge train.”

He said, “There is a need for mentorship from the senior players; the young players are doing excellently well. The Local Organising Committee have seen a few talents including a Libero and opposite player. We will see what we can do to nurture these talents, the challenge accommodated the senior players to mentor them and I know the program of mentorship is already yielding fruit.”

Maj Gen Gagariga said this is the first time the Nigeria Army, Chief of Naval Staff, Nigeria Air Force and other military formations will be represented at a volleyball competition in Nigeria

He said, “I urge them to keep the game alive and ensure the grassroots which we all started way back in 1985 is being pushed forward.”

Joel Ajayi
The founder of FAME Foundation (Female Advocacy, Mentoring, and Empowerment), Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, has called on the global community to support, not pity, para athletes.

Speaking at the recently concluded Play the Game 2025 Conference held in Tampere, Finland, Atoyebi emphasized that athletes with physical challenges require empowerment, policy support, and inclusion not sympathy.

Aderonke, a fearless journalist and lifelong advocate for women and girls in sports, has consistently championed the rights of marginalized groups through her foundation.

Known for her bold and passionate advocacy, she reiterated that para athletes deserve the same opportunities and resources as their able-bodied counterparts.

The international conference, held from October 5th to 8th, brought together journalists, policymakers, and global stakeholders to discuss pressing issues under the theme: “Breaking Barriers in Sports: Integration of Marginalized Groups and Persons with Disabilities.”

Delivering a powerful and interactive lecture, Atoyebi stated: “I want to conclude by saying that para athletes around the globe need our support, policy reviews, and implementation—not our pity. They don’t need sympathy; what they truly need is empowerment.”

Her impactful contribution at the event further amplified Africa’s voice in the global call for inclusion, equality, and policy-driven change in the world of sports.
