Joel Ajayi
President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel, has expressed profound gratitude and optimism about the future of the Engr. Habu Gumel Olympic Marathon Walk, describing the initiative as one that will positively impact more Nigerians in the years to come.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the event on Saturday in Abuja, Gumel noted the strong presence and support from key figures in Nigerian sports leadership, including the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and other stakeholders.
“This marathon, which bears my name, is a tremendous honour,” he said. “It marks the beginning of something truly special an initiative that I believe will grow stronger and more impactful with each passing year. I’m especially delighted to have the NSC Chairman and my dear friend, the former Chairman, here with us today.”
Gumel highlighted the broader purpose of the event, stressing that it goes beyond a simple walk.
“This initiative represents more than just a sporting activity; it’s part of a larger vision to promote wellness and integrate physical fitness into the professional lives of our members, particularly through engineering games and similar activities,” he explained.
He went on to appreciate the National Sports Commission for its vital role in making the event a success.
“I want to sincerely thank the NSC for the facilities and support they have provided. Their contribution has been invaluable, and I am confident they will continue to support this initiative in the future,” he said.
In conclusion, Gumel expressed heartfelt thanks to the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and its leadership for the honour.
“Today is not about making long speeches,” he said. “It is about gratitude. I sincerely thank the President of the NSE and the entire Council for honouring me in such a meaningful way. I deeply appreciate it and pray for blessings on everyone here. I remain committed to supporting this initiative in every way I can.”

The four-day program, which commenced on Monday, features a delegation of four directors from prominent European teams, including two from Kosovo and one from India, led by renowned football agent Diego Martins from Portugal.
The scouting program aims to identify and select outstanding players who will be given opportunities to showcase their skills in Europe.
Successful players will be offered the chance to take their careers to the next level, with the organizers assuring them of opportunities abroad.
According to the Director of the program and founder of Unique Football Academy, Mr. Jelil Oladimeji, this is not the first time the academy has organized such an event.
“This is the 4th edition, and we are proud of the progress and impact we have made so far in terms of exposing our raw talent to the European market,” he said.
