NAWOJ Emerges Winner Of FAME Foundation International Women Day Football Tournament In Abuja

Team National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), on Wednesday defeated  other 9 teams that participated in the 2023 edition of International Women Day Football Tournament women tournament to emerge champion in Nigeria’s Nations capital territory.

The tournament is an annual International Women’s Day football event that featured over 200 women under the ages of 40 to commemorate International Women’s Day 2023, on March 8.

It was a fierce battle full of fun, excitement in a conducive environment inside Area 3 Football pitch, Garki Area 3, Abuja where each team were showing their skill to entertain the larger crowd that came to enjoy themselves.

At the end of one day competition, Team NAWOJ pipped their counterpart team ANFN 1-0 to emerge overall champion as the third position goes to team FAME/AMAC.

Other teams that took part in the championship include Team USA, Team Canada, Team Bet9ja, Team ASHWAN, Team East Africa, Team North Africa.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Director of Fame Foundation, Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello said, “Nigeria is heterogeneous in nature.

“We have so much diversity in terms of religion, tribe, geopolitical zone and more. The only thing that brings us together is sports, especially football.

“Therefore, we are using this unifying factor as a tool for social change to preach against gender inequality. And we did not limit ourselves to sports, we equally have an education programme that is affecting women positively as well as other sectors.”

FAME Foundation boss, however urged all Stakeholders to channel their energy on the initiative that will empower as well as charting a way forward on many issues affecting them.

Nigeria Customs Service Embarks on Training Tour

As part of preparations for the 2025 African Women’s Club Championship, the Nigeria Customs Service women’s volleyball team has embarked on a training tour in Benin Republic.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from April 1 to 14 in Abuja, Nigeria.

The team departed for Benin Republic on Wednesday.

The Sports Secretary of the Nigeria Customs Service, Samuel Onikeku, appreciated the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and his management team for approving the training tour.

He emphasised that the tour would allow the players and coaching crew to assess their level of preparedness for the upcoming championship.

Onikeku expressed confidence in the team’s potential to make a strong impression at the tournament, citing the support received from the Federal Government of Nigeria, particularly through the First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu CON.

He said, “The volleyball team has traveled to Benin Republic for a 10-day training tour. The players have been in camp since February, and this tour will provide them with an opportunity to compete against teams outside the country.

“I want to appreciate the Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and his management team for approving this training tour.

“During the training tour, Nigeria Customs Service will take on strong opponents from Benin Republic, Ghana and Togo.

“The support we received from Nigeria’s First Lady, Her Excellency Senator Oluremi Tinubu CON, has been tremendous, and the team is committed to making the country proud.”

He said the service is determined to better their position after finishing fourth place in 2021.
