As the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) prepares for its Congress and presidential election in October 2026, the basketball community must look beyond personalities and ask a more fundamental question: what kind of leadership does Nigerian basketball need to reach its full potential?

Against this backdrop, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi deserves serious consideration for the presidency of the NBBF.

One of the strongest arguments for Dr. Abdullahi is his demonstrated commitment to basketball development. His involvement with the DAM Foundation Championship, held annually in December in Okene, has provided players and stakeholders with a platform for competition, exposure and opportunity.

The championship reflects a willingness to move beyond rhetoric and invest ideas, resources and energy into initiatives that directly impact the basketball community.

Another quality that stands out is accessibility. Sports leadership should never be removed from the athletes, coaches, officials and other stakeholders who sustain the game. Player and staff welfare must be treated as a central component of basketball development rather than an afterthought.

Dr. Abdullahi’s record as Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, coupled with his interactions with members of the basketball community through the DAM Foundation Championship, suggests a leadership approach that places value on people.

His support for members of the basketball family also deserves recognition. Through donations, assistance and efforts to facilitate employment opportunities, including opportunities within the federal civil service, he has demonstrated an understanding that sports development is ultimately about improving human lives.

Nigerian basketball needs a federation that can create pathways not only for athletes to compete, but also for players, coaches, officials and administrators to build sustainable futures.This is why the NBBF must be open to a new playbook.
Nigeria is blessed with enormous basketball talent, but talent alone cannot create a globally competitive system.

The federation needs innovative strategies for grassroots development, competitions, player welfare, sponsorship, infrastructure, talent identification, commercialisation and international partnerships.

Dr. Abdullahi’s exposure within and outside Africa could bring fresh perspectives to these areas. His experiences and ideas could help the NBBF study successful basketball models elsewhere and adapt them to Nigeria’s realities.

The forthcoming election, therefore, provides an opportunity for the basketball family to think beyond the familiar and consider leadership that combines accessibility, innovation, capacity and genuine commitment to the welfare of stakeholders.

Nigerian basketball deserves a new direction. Sometimes, achieving a different result requires nothing less than a different playbook.
