promising development for Nigerian hockey, the men’s national team is set to compete in the upcoming Hockey 5s World Cup in Oman.
The team, under the guidance of National Coach Baba Ndana, has diligently prepared for the tournament on their homebase turf in Kaduna.
The Nigeria Hockey Federation, led by President Engineer Simon Nkom, has played a pivotal role in ensuring the team’s participation in the maiden edition of the Hockey 5s World Cup. The federation’s efforts underscore their commitment to the growth and representation of Nigerian hockey on the global stage.
Learning from past challenges, the team has made an early departure to Oman, aiming to avoid the pitfalls of late arrivals experienced during last year’s Olympics qualifiers. The early departure aligns with the federation’s goal of starting the year with a strong representation on the world stage. The Nigeria men’s hockey team, buoyed by the support of fervent fans and hockey enthusiasts across the country, is poised to showcase their skills and determination in this prestigious competition.
As the tournament is about to start, the collective hopes and best wishes of the Nigerian supporters echo, wishing the team success, resilience, and a memorable performance in the Hockey 5s World Cup. The entire nation eagerly awaits the unfolding of this exciting chapter in Nigerian hockey.

Nigeria’s own Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi has brought immense pride to the nation after being named the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA) Role Model of the Year at a ceremony held in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The biennial ISCA Awards honour individuals and organizations that use sports and physical activity as tools for social change, inclusion, and empowerment across the globe. This year’s edition drew nominations from several countries, spotlighting outstanding figures who have transformed their communities through the power of sports.
Atoyebi’s unwavering commitment to gender equality and youth empowerment has made her a prominent voice in the sports-for-development space. Through her advocacy and leadership, she continues to demonstrate how sports can serve as a bridge for education, unity, and hope—especially among young women in Nigeria and beyond.
As part of the recognition, Atoyebi received a €3,000 cash prize along with the global visibility that accompanies the prestigious ISCA honour.
Speaking shortly after receiving the award, she expressed deep gratitude and excitement, dedicating the recognition to her team and everyone who has supported her journey.
