Dr Mustapha Abdullahi Campaign Organisation (DAMCO) has said Nigerian basketball needs a leadership model built on teamwork, inclusion, accountability and measurable results to reposition the sport and unlock its full potential.

In a statement Signed on Tuesday by Dr Abdullahi Mustapha Campaign Organization (DAMCO) in Abuja stated that, the organisation, which is supporting the presidential aspiration of Dr Mustapha Abdullahi for the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), said his leadership philosophy is centred on bringing people together, encouraging participation and pursuing tangible outcomes.

According to DAMCO, sustainable progress cannot be achieved by one individual but requires the collective efforts of players, coaches, officials, administrators, stakeholders and young talents.

The campaign said Abdullahi’s approach to leadership is based on listening to stakeholders, creating opportunities for participation and uniting diverse interests around common objectives.

It argued that such an approach is particularly important for Nigerian basketball, which possesses significant talent and potential but requires stronger collaboration among stakeholders to achieve sustained development.

Quoting former USA Basketball coach Nell Fortner, the campaign stated: “If you can learn to lead from your position, you will always have an important role on a team.”

DAMCO said the principle reflects Abdullahi’s understanding of leadership as a collective responsibility, where every stakeholder has a meaningful role in achieving institutional and sporting success.

Beyond inclusion, the campaign pointed to Abdullahi’s professional record as evidence of what it described as his results-oriented approach to leadership.

It cited his service as Senior Technical Assistant to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology and his tenure as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria.

According to DAMCO, his experience in youth mobilisation, sports coordination and public-sector responsibilities has reinforced his belief that leadership should be measured by impact rather than position.

“Achievement, for Dr Abdullahi, is not simply about occupying a position; it is about what becomes possible because of the responsibility entrusted to him,” the campaign stated.

The organisation added that his leadership philosophy focuses on turning opportunities into outcomes, challenges into solutions and responsibilities into platforms for sustainable development.

DAMCO therefore called for a leadership approach in Nigerian basketball that combines people-centred engagement with a strong culture of delivery, accountability and institutional development.

It urged members of the basketball community to consider a model that places teamwork, inclusion, accountability, measurable targets and sustainable development at the centre of the sport’s next chapter.
