Nigeria’s Mixed 4x400m team excited by African Record set at Olympics debut in Tokyo
Joel Ajayi
Although they would have been hoping to at least make the final of their event at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics, Nigeria’s Mixed 4x400m quartet comprising Emmanuel Ojeli, Imaobong Nse Uko, Samson Nathaniel and Patience Okon-George will leave the competition with their heads held high after storming to a new African Record of 3:13.60 to finish 5th in their semi final race.
Speaking after the race, Okon-George revealed that the squad is consoled by the African Record they set while competing at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo.
She said, “The last race we ran back in June was 3:14.09 and the 3:13.60 we ran today is good. We are happy with the new African Record. It was not easy running with 43second runners on the anchor leg. Now that we haven’t made it to the final, I’m just going to be focused and get ready for the 400m. I think I’m good to go”.
Teammate Emmanuel Ojeli also revelled in the fact that the quartet made history by becoming the first African team to qualify for and compete at the Olympics.
“We have been trying so hard to qualify in the 4x400m men and women so when we heard that the Mixed Relays was going to hold, we just needed to put ourselves together to qualify for the event. We are the first African team to qualify for the event at the Olympics and ran an African Record as well”, he said.
The quartet will now set their sights towards qualifying for next year’s World Championships in Oregon.

Hon. Kabiru Amadu Leads Healthy Living Campaign at Bauchi Road Walk
Joel Ajayi
Prominent political leaders and stakeholders converged in Bauchi State on Saturday, December 13, for the 7th edition of the Annual Grand Road Walk, an event aimed at promoting physical fitness, social inclusion and national unity.
The event was attended by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, who was represented by the Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Hon. Kabiru Amadu; Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed; distinguished senators; the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly; members of the National and State Assemblies; senior civil servants; and corporate partners, including the Chairman of AYM Shafa Energy.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Kabiru Amadu described the annual road walk as a growing national platform for health awareness and social cohesion.
He praised Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, for his leadership and commitment to policies that prioritise the health and welfare of citizens.
“Governor Bala Mohammed’s dedication to health, infrastructure and inclusive governance is evident in the steady progress being recorded across Bauchi State,” Amadu said. “We are all beneficiaries of his vision for a healthier and more inclusive society.”
He also commended the Chairman of the Association of Physical Fitness Clubs, Bauchi State chapter, Hon. Aminu Garu, for the successful organisation of the event, noting that his leadership has strengthened the association and expanded its impact.
The Speaker further acknowledged the role of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, led by its Speaker, Alhaji Auwal Jatau, emphasising the importance of collaboration between federal and state legislatures in delivering people-centred policies.
According to Amadu, the Grand Road Walk goes beyond physical exercise, serving as a reminder of the need for Nigerians to adopt healthier lifestyles amid rising cases of preventable diseases linked to inactivity.
He highlighted the strong participation of the Association of Persons with Disabilities, describing their involvement as a powerful statement on inclusion and equal opportunity.
“This walk reminds us that national development must be inclusive,” he said. “Every step we take should move us closer to a society where opportunities are available to all Nigerians, regardless of physical ability.”
Amadu also lauded the participation of security agencies, including the Nigerian Air Force Special Taskforce and the Police Community Relations Committee, as well as the support of private sector partners such as AYM Shafa Energy, noting that sustainable progress depends on collaboration across sectors.
He called on government institutions, corporate organisations, civil society groups and the media to continue promoting health awareness, physical fitness and inclusive policies that make sports accessible to all Nigerians, particularly in underserved communities.
The event concluded with expressions of gratitude to the organisers, sponsors and participants for their contributions to promoting public health and community engagement across the country.
