Following its earlier expression of condolences, a high-level delegation from the National Sports Commission (NSC) has concluded a condolence visit to the Government and people of Kano State, as well as families of victims of the tragic road accident involving members of the state’s contingent returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival.

Led by Director of Finance Alamin Mustapha, alongside Director of Facilities Muhammed Rabiu and Special Assistant on Special Duties and Protocol Kawu Ahmed Muazu, the delegation delivered a personal message of sympathy on behalf of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade.

“We came not just to mourn, but to stand with you in person,” said Mr. Mustapha. “Having met with some of the grieving families, we leave with heavier hearts but a firmer resolve to ensure that their pain is not in vain.”

The NSC reiterated its earlier commitment to fast-track a more strict national safety protocol for sporting contingents. This includes:
• Mandatory vehicle inspection and certification before national events;
• Comprehensive insurance coverage for athletes, officials, and support staff;
• Better accommodation and logistics planning;
• Post-event safety audits to hold states and organizers accountable.

“When we first made these commitments, it was policy. After this visit, it is now personal,” the Commission stated.

Recognizing the devastating impact of the tragedy—especially on households that lost primary breadwinners—the NSC also revealed plans to work with the Kano State Government to:
• Establish a relief and welfare support package for bereaved families;
• Explore a Memorial or annual award in honor of the fallen athletes and officials;
• Provide psychosocial support to survivors and next of kin.

“The stories we heard, the children left behind, the dreams cut short—it moved us deeply,” the Commission said. “While nothing can replace a life, we must ensure their memory lives on with dignity and action.”

The NSC also praised the Kano State Government for declaring a state-wide day of mourning and called on the nation to continue to hold the people of Kano in thoughts and prayers.

“Sports is a unifying force in Nigeria, but in this moment, so is grief. Let us unite in compassion, remembrance, and renewed commitment to the safety and welfare of all our athletes,” the statement concluded.

The NSC reaffirmed that further details of the support initiatives would be shared after consultations with the relevant stakeholders in the Sporting family.
