NSC DG Bukola Olopade congratulates Nigeria U19 Cricket team for famous win over New Zealand at ICC World cup in Malaysia
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, has congratulated the Nigeria U19 Cricket Team for their famous win over New Zealand at the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia.
The Nigeria Junior Female Yellow Greens as the Nigerian U19 Team are fondly called, shocked the entire Cricket World with a two-run win over test playing giant, New Zealand on Monday.
The game which was seen by many as the battle of underdogs and giants was delayed for about two hours due to heavy downpour before the Nigerian girls shocked one of the tournament’s top favourites.
Reacting to the team’s performance, the DG described the win as a famous one that will go down in the history books as one of the sports biggest upsets.
” I am very excited for our U19 cricket team and this particular win is worthy of celebration for so many reasons.The girls showed resilience which is the true Nigerian spirit and patriotism to upset cricket giant Iike New Zealand”.
” The result is also a testament to the kind of job the Nigeria Cricket Federation through it’s President Uyi Akpata has been doing to elevate the standard of the Sport in Nigeria and this is why the National Sports Commission under the Chairmanship of Mallam Shehu Dikko will continue to be very supportive to the Federation”.
The DG however urged the girls not to be carried away after beating the New Zealanders and charged them to see the victory as a stepping stone to bigger achievements.
” I am very sure our girls can go all the way and shock the entire Cricket world after the display they put up against New Zealand and that is the focus of the team. Once again, congratulations to the girls”.
The historic victory over New Zealand has now put the Nigerian girls in pole position topping it’s group C standings at the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup 2025.

From Streets to Stardom: Unique Futbol Academy Scouting Program Inspires Ibadan’s Young Footballers
Ibadan is buzzing with excitement as the Unique Football Academy Scouting Program kicks off, bringing together top European football clubs and talented young Nigerian players.
The four-day program, which commenced on Monday, features a delegation of four directors from prominent European teams, including two from Kosovo and one from India, led by renowned football agent Diego Martins from Portugal.
The scouting program aims to identify and select outstanding players who will be given opportunities to showcase their skills in Europe.
Successful players will be offered the chance to take their careers to the next level, with the organizers assuring them of opportunities abroad.
According to the Director of the program and founder of Unique Football Academy, Mr. Jelil Oladimeji, this is not the first time the academy has organized such an event.
“This is the 4th edition, and we are proud of the progress and impact we have made so far in terms of exposing our raw talent to the European market,” he said.
The program has already proven successful, with several players from previous editions going on to excel in European leagues. Some notable examples include Haruna Saleh with PAOK in Greece and Praisegod Emersons in Slovakia.
As the program continues, clubs are gearing up to exhibit their talents, and the future looks bright for Nigeria’s young football stars.
