NSC Hails Nigeria’s Para Powerlifting Contingent for Stellar Performance at World Championships

The Nigeria Sports Commission (NSC) has extended heartfelt congratulations to the nation’s para powerlifting contingent for their outstanding performance at the just-concluded World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt.

Team Nigeria showcased remarkable strength and national pride finishing second overall on the medals table with an impressive 20 medals comprising 8 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze.

China narrowly claimed the top spot with 21 medals (13 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze).

In his congratulatory message, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, commended the athletes for their resilience and for lifting the Nigerian flag high on the global stage.

“Our para-athletes have once again proven that Nigeria remains a powerhouse in para powerlifting. Their dedication and discipline embody the true spirit of our nation. The NSC remains committed to supporting and empowering our athletes to reach even greater heights,” said Hon. Olopade.

Also speaking, the President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Mr. Sunday Odebode, praised the NSC’s leadership for its unwavering support of para sports. He lauded the efforts of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, describing their impact as transformative.

“This is a breath of fresh air for para sports in Nigeria. The athletes are motivated, the system is improving, and there’s renewed confidence among our teams. We deeply appreciate the commitment of the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the DG, Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their exceptional leadership and support,” Odebode said.

Also, Nigeria’s para-athletes are gearing up for their next challenge, the West African Para Soccer Tournament, set to take place in Lagos, as preparations continue under the guidance and support of the NSC.

The NSC reaffirmed its resolve to continue prioritizing inclusivity and excellence in sports, ensuring that para athletes receive the recognition and resources they deserve.

In a historic milestone for Nigerian sports, the PremiumTrust Bank Abuja City International Half Marathon has been officially awarded the prestigious World Athletics Label for its second edition, a distinction achieved in record time. This remarkable feat makes it the first marathon globally to earn the label so swiftly, underscoring both the organizational excellence of NSML and the dynamic rise of PremiumTrust Bank, currently celebrated as Nigeria’s fastest-growing commercial bank.

The 2025 edition is expected to attract elite international athletes, top local runners, and marathon enthusiasts from around the world, alongside officials from World Athletics who will oversee the competition.
