President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, Esq., FNSE, has celebrated Nigeria’s historic achievements on the international tennis stage following the women’s national team’s promotion to the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group II, while applauding the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the NTF Board for their unwavering support and visionary leadership.

The women’s feat comes just months after Nigeria’s men’s team secured promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II, making 2026 a landmark year for Nigerian tennis and marking the first time both national teams have earned promotion in the same calendar year.

Describing the twin successes as a watershed moment for the sport, Ochei commended the players and technical crew for their commitment, resilience and determination throughout the competition.”I heartily congratulate our exceptional womenathletes and the technical crew on this remarkable achievement. Once again, you have demonstrated the resilience, discipline and fighting spirit that define Nigerian tennis. This promotion is not just a victory for the team but for the entire nation,” Ochei said.

The NTF President also expressed profound appreciation to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Malam Shehu Dikko, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, members of the NTF Board, sponsors and other stakeholders for their consistent support, which he said has been instrumental in the federation’s renewed success.

“Our gratitude goes to the National Sports Commission for its unwavering commitment to sports development and for creating an enabling environment for our athletes to excel. I also appreciate members of the NTF Board, our sponsors and stakeholders whose collective efforts have continued to strengthen the federation. This achievement is the product of teamwork, strategic planning and sustained investment in our players,” he added.

Nigeria’s women sealed their historic promotion with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over hosts Botswana in the Billie Jean King Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group III promotional play-off in Gaborone.

The Nigerian team took an early advantage when the in-form Success Ogunjobi defeated Botswana’s Chelsea Chakanyuka 6-2, 6-4 in the opening singles match. The quartet of Etoro Bassey, Success Ogunjobi, Khadijat Mohammed and Oyinlomo Quadre, under the guidance of coach Rotimi Akinloye, went on to secure the decisive victory that earned Nigeria promotion to Group II.

The latest triumph caps an extraordinary year for Nigerian tennis following the men’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II earlier in 2026, completing a historic double that highlights the country’s growing competitiveness on the global tennis stage.

The achievement also reflects the steady progress being recorded under the current leadership of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, reinforcing Nigeria’s emergence as one of Africa’s rising powers in international tennis and signalling a bright future for the sport.
