PSC Chairman Urges Officers to Prioritize Self-Development for Stronger Policing

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (Rtd), mni, NPM, has charged officers of the Nigeria Police Force to embrace self-development as a core strategy for building capacity and driving institutional excellence.

In a statement issued by the Police Reform Secretariat Head, Strategic Communication and Public Outreach Collins Ajibola on Wednesday

Speaking at a Strategic Leadership and Change Management Retreat for Divisional Officers of the Nigeria Police Force, organized by the Police Reform Secretariat in partnership with UNDP, GS-Foundation, and CLEEN, with funding support from the Federal Foreign Office of the Government of Germany, and held at the National Institute of Police Studies (NIPS), Argungu stressed that the true strength of any institution rests on the quality, character, and capacity of its personnel.

Delivering a lecture on “Ethics and Professionalism: Bedrock of Policing Code of Conduct,” he emphasized that while institutional training and workshops remain important, individual commitment to self-growth is what separates great officers from the average.

“We are in an age where knowledge evolves rapidly. As officers, you cannot afford to rely solely on what you were taught five years ago. You must constantly seek growth — intellectually, professionally, and ethically,” he stated.

The PSC Chairman highlighted key areas for personal growth, including intellectual development, leadership intelligence, ethics and integrity, and digital literacy. He urged officers to:

  • Continuously read, research, and enroll in relevant online courses.
  • Attend professional development programs and seminars.
  • Pursue higher academic qualifications.

He further reminded officers that self-development goes beyond technical skills to include strengthening moral character and maintaining integrity in public service. With digital transformation reshaping institutions worldwide, he encouraged officers to sharpen their digital skills and adapt to emerging technologies.

The Chairman’s message, warmly received by participants, was described as more than a motivational charge but a strategic reminder that sustainable institutional progress depends on the growth of its people.

By urging officers to take ownership of their personal and professional development, Argungu set the tone for a more dynamic, competent, and future-ready police force.

The statement was issued on Wednesday by Collins Ajibola, Head of Strategic Communication and Public Outreach, Police Reform Secretariat.

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary, the PBAT Door 2 Door Movement has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the nation’s resilience, unity, and democratic journey.

Speaking during the commemorative event, the National Coordinator of the Movement, Comrade Sunday Adekanbi Asuku, underscored the significance of the anniversary, describing it as “an incredible milestone that reflects our strength as a people and our unity in diversity.”

“As a nation, we celebrate our founding fathers, our fallen heroes, and all past leaders whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedom we enjoy today,” Asuku said. “Without their labor and effort, we would not be where we are.”

The Movement, which operates under the grand patronage of High Chief Oweizide Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), has been at the forefront of mobilizing grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration across the country.

Reaffirming its commitment to national unity, peace, and development, the PBAT Door 2 Door Movement urged Nigerians to shun corruption, banditry, and insecurity, stressing that only through collective effort can the nation attain greatness.

“As we celebrate 65 years of independence, let us promote peace, unity, growth, and development. Let us rally behind President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Nigeria shall be great again if we work together as one people with one destiny,” Asuku emphasized.

The group also paid glowing tribute to President Tinubu, describing him as the Commander-in-Chief who embodies the vision of a stronger, more prosperous Nigeria.

The anniversary celebration, the Movement noted, is not just a remembrance of the past but also a call to action for every Nigerian to contribute to the nation’s progress.

“Let us forge ahead. There must be a way forward. Nigeria will only move higher if we remain united,” Asuku added.
