Shehu Dikko Describes 2020/21 NPFL Season, The Best In History

Chairman, League Management Company (LMC), Malam Shehu Dikko has expressed satisfaction with the just concluded 2020/2021 NPFL season even as he picked it as the best ever league in history statistically.

Dikko divulge this while speaking at Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), FCT Chapter Guest Forum in Abuja, highlighted the positives from the just concluded season, asserted that the positives far outweighed the negatives people may not have noticed.

He emphasized that Nigeria league owner did so well during the pandemic saying that unlike other countries where most players took pay cut, NPFL players received their full salaries.

“The last League season recorded impressive statistic better than the previous seasons. The number of away wins recorded (36) was the highest since the NPFL took charge as owners and organisers of the Nigerian elite league

“Technically it was the best League, not just in the NPFL history but since the start of professional football league in Nigeria.”

“Commercially it was challenging, but it was the most innovative, because we have brought innovations that people thought was impossible to do before. It was challenging because funds did not come the way we thought it will come.”

“Organizationally it was very challenging because of the Covid 19 and some other issues. When I say it is the best technically, we start looking at the numbers and numbers don’t lie.” the astute football administrator stated

He continued “First and foremost we had 380 matches, 288 matches were won, 92 were drawn. 791 goals were scored, an average of 2.8 goals per match.”

“It is the highest statistics of goals that we have ever had in the league. “

“352 home wins where recorded, 36 away victories, the highest away victories in the history of the league.”

“92 matches where drawn, it is also the highest.”

“Total numbers of penalties awarded this is 81, compared to other seasons where we have over 100 it shows the referees also did well.”

Speaking earlier, FCT SWAN chairman, Bunmi Haruna emphasised the need for the LMC to involve the media more in its activities. He also urged the league body to aim for the very best because nothing is impossible.

“We drive football development across the world, so we are partners in progress.”

“It is our desire that our league should be self-sustaining, that our clubs win CAF competition glories and have financial breakthrough.”

“We want our league to attract he best players cross the world, we want a Cristiano Ronaldo to one day decide he has to play in the NPFL.”

“These things might look impossible right now, but if we put in efforts, impossible is nothing.” Bunmi enthused.

Honouring Heroes, Preserving Legacy: Toptier Sports Management Leads African Football Legends Match

Toptier Sports Management, the driving force behind the African Legends Football Game, is using football to honour the icons who shaped Nigeria and African football while championing a more sustainable future for the sport.

As Lagos prepares to welcome some of the biggest names in African football for the Legends Football Game on November 8, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, says celebrating the men who gave Nigeria and Africa some of their greatest sporting memories is a responsibility worth undertaking.

For Nwoko, the initiative goes beyond bringing former international stars together for a nostalgic football encounter. It is about recognising their sacrifices, preserving their legacies and drawing attention to the need to build a football ecosystem that continues to serve players long after their playing careers have ended.

Through Toptier Sports Management, Nwoko has positioned the company as one of the organisations working to create meaningful partnerships and opportunities for the growth of Nigerian football. Its work includes partnerships with the Nigeria National League (NNL), alongside other efforts to strengthen the business and institutional foundations of the game.

The company’s latest initiative, the Legends Football Game, is perhaps one of its most significant statements yet: a deliberate effort to give honour to the generation that helped place Nigerian football firmly on the global map.

Presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, the game will hold at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos, on Sunday, November 8, as part of CANEX WKND 2026.

The event marks 30 years since Nigeria’s remarkable football achievements of the mid-1990s, particularly the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia and the historic 1996 Olympic gold medal victory in Atlanta, where Nigeria defeated football powerhouses Brazil and Argentina.

The 1994 generation had earlier announced Nigeria’s arrival on the global stage with an impressive debut at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, reaching the Round of 16. Two years later, many members of that generation formed the backbone of the Olympic team that made history in Atlanta.

The Nigerian contingent will feature 15 Super Eagles legends from the celebrated 1994 and 1996 squads, who will face a formidable team of 13 African football greats.

Among the Nigerian icons expected to feature are Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal, Ben Iroha, Victor Ikpeba, Austin Eguavoen, Aloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju and Finidi George.

The African Legends squad will be headlined by former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegalese great El-Hadji Diouf, former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and Ivorian international Didier Zokora.

Other celebrated names expected include Ghana’s John Paintsil and Anthony Baffoe, Senegal’s Khalilou Fadiga, Burkina Faso’s Aristide Bancé, Cameroon’s Rigobert Song and Alexandre Song, Zimbabwe’s Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari, as well as South African goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

For Nwoko, bringing these football icons together is a way of saying thank you to men whose achievements transcended the boundaries of the football pitch and helped shape how the world viewed African sporting talent.

“These men carried the hopes of a nation,” she said. “Thirty years on, this is our chance to bring them home to the fans who never stopped celebrating them.”

But the Toptier CEO is also looking beyond the spectacle. She believes the recognition of past heroes must be accompanied by deliberate efforts to improve the future of athletes, particularly in areas of welfare, career development and opportunities beyond active competition.

Speaking at the unveiling of the initiative, Nwoko said the Legends Football Game was also designed to provoke important conversations about what the next generation of African athletes stands to inherit.

“Thirty years ago, a generation of Nigerian footballers showed the world what African talent was capable of. The Legends Football Game is our way of saying thank you to them, and our chance to ask harder questions: what are we building for this generation and the next?” she said.

She added that the partnership with Afreximbank was driven by the ambition to build structures that would enable African athletes to translate their sporting careers into sustainable opportunities beyond the pitch.

Beyond the main event, the organisers have lined up activities designed to connect the football legends with the next generation. The former internationals are expected to arrive in Lagos on November 6, ahead of a series of engagements, including a mini football camp involving 500 young players and a professional photoshoot.

The match-day programme will feature drummers, dancers and performances by the Loud Urban Choir before the legends take to the pitch for the 5pm kick-off. A special presentation will also be made to the heroes of the 1994 and 1996 generations after the final whistle.

Gates will open at 1:30pm, with fans unable to attend the stadium able to follow the match live on NTA, AIT and Silverbird between 5pm and 7pm.

In bringing the legends back together, Chichi Nwoko and her team are making a statement that the history of African football deserves to be celebrated, its heroes deserve recognition, and the next generation deserves a stronger foundation on which to build its own legacy.
