Sports Minister assures Rowing, Canoeing, Sailing Federation maximum Support

The Nigerian Rowing, Canoe, and Sailing Federation have received commendation and support from the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Mr. Sunday Dare for sustained efforts at developing the sports and promoting the wellbeing of athletes.

Speaking at the 2021 Annual Admiral Porbeni Boat Race at the Jabi Lake, on Saturday, Abuja.

The Minister said “Let me sincerely commend the efforts of Admiral Porbeni for the sustainability of this annual race in the last couple of years. His efforts have not only improved our ratings as the number one country in Africa, it has ensured that we qualified for the Olympics and Paralympics in Para, Canoeing and Para Rowing.

“I congratulate you and the athletes and urge you to use this event as a springboard for the other qualifiers. Be rest assured of the Ministry’s commitment and support to actualize the dreams of our athletes to win laurels for our fatherland.”

The Minister further said” I’m most encouraged by your zeal and commitment towards the sustainability of this competition. This should motivate other Federations to key into the philosophy of the Ministry of Youth and sports Development.

Since sports development cannot take place without competition, no athletes can excel without proper motivation and welfare. You cannot let your sails down or allow your boat of success drift away”

He charged the athletes to exhibit high standards in line with international practice and also obey the covid-19 Protocol.

13 States, 2 clubs, and few individuals are taking part in the two-day event with States presenting only 6 participants for each event.

FCT Outplays Edo to Grab Handball Bronze at Gateway Games

Team FCT bounced back from their narrow semi-final defeat to hosts Ogun State with an emphatic victory over Team Edo to secure the bronze medal in handball at the 2024 Gateway Games.

In the third-place match played on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the resilient FCT side dominated proceedings and overpowered their Edo counterparts with a convincing 30–17 win.

Displaying determination and teamwork, Team FCT shook off the disappointment of missing out on the final and ended the tournament on a high, earning praise from spectators and officials alike for their spirited performance.

Speaking after the victory, FCT Handball Coach Ayo Joshua attributed the success to the team’s resilience and strong desire to win a medal.

“We planned for gold but, unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve that. However, we are happy that we didn’t leave Ogun State empty-handed—we were able to secure the bronze medal,” he said.

“We have the best team, skillful players who follow instructions, and by the grace of God, come the next festival in Enugu, FCT Handball will come out even stronger.”
