Former Administrator of the Jaba Local Government in Kaduna State, Hon. Nita Byack George, along with three others, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master’s degrees in Policy and Strategic Studies, as well as Public Governance and Leadership, from the Abuja Leadership Centre (ALC) at Yakubu Gowon University, formerly known as the University of Abuja.
According to Professor Abdulhamid Ozohu-Suleiman, the Director of the Centre, these academic achievements were conferred after the recipients successfully completed all requirements, including the external defense of their theses on Thursday, May 21, 2026, pending the approval of the University’s Senate.
In addition to Hon. George, Rashidat Bola Jogbojogbo and Paul Obianuju Ojukwu were awarded PhDs in Policy and Strategic Studies, while Linda Chinyere Nwofor earned a Master’s degree in Public Governance and Leadership.
Professor Ozohu-Suleiman praised the external examiner, Professor Charles Nwekeaku from Nasarawa State University, for his thorough and professional evaluation of the doctoral candidates. He reiterated the university’s commitment to building stronger and better leaders in society through the programs offered at the Centre.
He urged the awardees to strictly adhere to addressing the issues raised during their dissertation and thesis defenses while commending their resilience in pursuing knowledge at such a high level.
In response, Hon. George expressed her gratitude to the university and its lecturers for providing the platform to acquire knowledge at this level. She highlighted the importance of her thesis, which focused on ‘violence against men and women,’ stating that its negative effects are central to numerous societal challenges, including low productivity in the workplace and family crises.
She urged the federal government to take domestic violence seriously, emphasizing that “the violence we see in our society today is actually an offshoot of domestic violence learned through socialization that was never corrected. The more children witness domestic violence at home, the more likely they are to reenact those behaviors in society.”
Hon. George also recommended the effective implementation of existing laws and treaties aimed at curbing domestic violence. “I’m hoping that the recommendations from this study will be taken seriously. The Violence Against Persons (VAP) law has already been enacted, but the challenge lies in its implementation. I want to sincerely thank the Abuja Leadership Centre, led by Professor Ozohu-Suleiman, and all the staff for their support,” she stated.
Another PhD awardee, Rashidat Bola Jogbojogbo, described her academic milestone as significant, praising the leadership of the Centre. She noted that her research thesis primarily focused on poverty and proposed practical solutions for how the government can reduce it to a minimum.
Jogbojogbo identified poor coordination and implementation as major obstacles to the effectiveness of various government social investment programs. She encouraged citizens to take initiative by learning new skills and engaging in productive activities to combat poverty.
“I’m eternally grateful to God and the Director of the Abuja Leadership Centre for this landmark achievement. My research focused on poverty, which is pervasive in our society and affects many people. I recognize that the government implements various social investment programs, but most of them fail to deliver the expected results due to poor implementation, funding, and coordination.
“I urge citizens to learn new skills and embrace productive work, with or without government support. Eradicating poverty will take time, but we can certainly work to reduce it,” she advised.
The Abuja Leadership Centre at the University of Abuja is a TETFUND Centre of Excellence for Public Governance and Leadership, dedicated to enhancing public governance and leadership in Nigeria and beyond.

This is about more than online courses; it is about developing a resilient, highly skilled workforce at scale to meet the demands of the modern economy.
