FCTA Carries Out Fumigation Of Schools, Distributes Facemasks, Sanitizers Others

As part of the arrangements for the reopening of schools in the FCT, the Federal Capital Territory Administrations (FCTA) has carried out the fumigation of Secondary Schools, as well as made available facemasks, hand sanitizers and infrared thermometers for use in these schools.

Briefing newsmen in Abuja on Monday August 3, 2020, the Chairman, FCT Secondary Education Board, Hon. Yahaya Musa Muhammad, said the development is in compliance with the NCDC guidelines on the reopening of schools as well as the protocols set by the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19.

Hon. Muhammad, while clarifying that only the terminal classes of Senior Secondary three (SS3) as well as Junior Secondary three (JSS 3) would be resuming for lectures in the schools, in preparation for their upcoming examinations, further stated that appointed representatives of the FCTA, alongside the principals of these schools are to ensure adequate compliance with all the health protocols, including the use of face masks, observance of social distancing as well as regular hand washing.

He also disclosed that the Department of Quality Assurance in the Education Secretariat would be visiting the private primary and secondary schools in the FCT to ensure that they comply with all the necessary protocols before they are allowed to reopen.

“I’m going personally to visit the schools to ensure that all the things that are supposed to be there are there and those that are not there, we will force them to comply before going on with the students.

He explained that isolation rooms have been made available in each of the secondary schools as well as clinics in compliance with the NCDC protocols on the resumption of schools.

He assured that the issue of social distancing in the schools would not constitute a major problem, in view of the fact that only the terminal classes would be resuming.

Also speaking at the occasion, the Secretary, FCT Health Secretariat, Dr Muhammad Kawu commended the FCT Administration for making available Personal Protective Equipment to all the areas that deserve them, including the schools.

He added that the Health and Human Services Secretariat is also collaborating with the Education Secretariat for the training of teachers on the non-pharmaceutical means of preventing COVID-19.

The items made available include 770 infrared thermometers, 1200 surgical face masks, 14,000 pieces of various types of fabric face masks, 18,000 500ml hand sanitizers.

He said additional hand sanitizers would also be made available.

JAMB conducts third party exam for Hos workers

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board conducted promotional examination for junior workers under the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

About 450 junior staff participated in the computer based test examination at Ade-Ola International School, Kubwa – a suburb in the nation’s capital.

Speaking with journalists at the end of the exercise, the Director in charge of Abuja zone for JAMB, Hajia Zainab Hamzat said the exercise went smoothly.

She noted that 476 staff under the HoS were expected to participate in the promotion exercise but only 450 workers showed up for the exam.

The drector said: “Everything went well as usual. We call it third party exam. It is a promotion exam for HoS. All their officers sat for the exam for the purpose of promotion.

“We had two sessions – morning and afternoon. In the morning we expected 250 but 232 were present. In the afternoon we expected 226 and eight were absent.

“The exam was smooth. Everything went well.

The examination was for all the junior staff of HoS. We had immigration officers, fire fighters, civil defence and other paramilitary organisations under HoS for the examination.”

Also speaking, Durector of Ade-Ola International School, Kubwa, Mercy Olaosegbe lauded JAMB for setting high standards in professional examination.

She said: “The examination went well. We have all the facilities to conduct this examination. JAMB will not allow you to participate in these exams if your facilities are not up to standard. Because our centre is doing well, we have been participating in third party examination organised by JAMB.”
