GCCYF, health stakeholders seek improved primary health care delivery for Nigerians
… As Nigeria rates as 3rd child mortality nation after India, Pakistan
By Mustapha Suleiman
A Non-Governmental Organisation Golden Change For Concerned Youths Forum (GCCYF) with support from Child Heath Foundation based in the United States recently held a training for community heath extension workers on preterm birth complication management aimed at reducing maternal mortality rate and neonatal deaths within Kwali Area Council, Abuja.
Speaking at the well-attended event, the Director Primary Health Care of Kwali Area Council, Dr Samuel Adudu explained that the healthcare workers who attended the training will have their capacity improved, especially regarding the management of pneumonia in children and in the use of pulse estimator to measure oxygen saturation.
According to him, participants at the training will also be given a picture of whether there is post psycobia or not which he said it’s very critical in either managing the children outpatients or referring to higher centre.
He said, “ Of course, the training also captured whether there is a need for admission and when there is any need for admission, he will be referred to a secondary health facility. And again, this training is very impactful because in the presentation I say that about 4 million children die yearly from respiratory tract infections and most them are from developing countries of which Nigeria is one. So, it will go a long way in helping in building the capacity of our staff in managing respiratory tract infections, especially pneumonia.
Dr Adudu suggested that the training should be replicated in other Area Councils, saying it will help build the capacity of the staff in managing respiratory tract infections especially in children.
In his own submission, Head of Health Department of Gwagwalada Area Council Dr Adeyemi Adenira said that he decided to participate at the training programme because of its immense contribution to primary health development and to support Golden Change for Concerned Youths Forum (GCCYF) in Kwali Area council.
Dr Adenira said, “They are holding training on grass root health issues from Kwali Area Council down to my council.’’
Also speaking, the President of Golden Change for Concerned Youths Forum (GCCYF) Mr Ngwakwe Williams said that the essence of the gathering is to train community care providers on health management in pneumonia diagnosis and treatment.
“You will agree with me that the maternal mortality rate of Nigeria is one of the highest apart from India and Pakistan that have higher maternal mortality rate in the world. Nigeria is next! That is not acceptable we must do all we can to ensure we improve primary health care in Nigeria.’’
Williams lamented that healthcare providers after many years of being employed are not trained, calling on government to make adequate budget available in order to train and retrain health workers.
According to him. “This is because every new disease is being discovered, like recently we had Corona Virus, it is a virus that nobody has no previous knowledge of how to handle, so, if people are not trained on how to manage this, it will lead to many deaths.’’
He commended the child health foundation of USA who have supported the NGO to train one of the FCT communities health extension workers to improve health service and care within the Kwali Area Council.
Ngwakwe complained of the shortage of health workers in various health in the country, saying “ we discovered that in many health centres, one person is responsible for providing health care to several people, therefore, they need to employ more health workers in order to improve our health centres because primary care is the most that is needed to be taken of.’’
The GCCYF president said that the NGO distributed over 100 pieces of birthing kits to all Community Health Extension workers (CHEWs) that participated at the training programme to increase child birth and antenatal at the at the various health facilities centres that are working.

Nigeria’s Historic Bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games: A Call for National and Global Support

Joel Ajayi
Nigeria is poised to make history as it seeks to host the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, a monumental opportunity that promises to transform the nation’s economy, infrastructure, and global standing.
More than a sporting spectacle, the Games would serve as a catalyst for development across multiple sectors, leaving behind a legacy of national pride and sustainable growth.
The benefits of hosting the Games extend far beyond the sports arena. Nigeria stands to gain both empirical and non-empirical advantages, with direct, indirect, and induced impacts that will touch every corner of society. Infrastructural development will take center stage, with new facilities such as indoor sports halls, conference centers, and improved road networks reshaping urban landscapes while strengthening the nation’s capacity to host future international events.
Economic growth is another significant dividend. Over 10,000 jobs are expected to be created, spanning construction, facility management, event planning, and tourism services.
The hospitality industry will undergo major improvements as hotels and resorts are upgraded to meet international standards, while local restaurants, lounges, and tourist attractions will see a surge in patronage from international visitors. Small and medium enterprises, particularly in the transport, finance, and food service sectors, will become some of the greatest beneficiaries, as the Games generate new demand and expand opportunities for local businesses.
The Commonwealth Games will also accelerate the growth of Nigeria’s sports industry.
Investments in training facilities, coaching, and talent development will inspire a new generation of athletes, ensuring long-term benefits that extend beyond 2030, a major focus of the President Bola Tinubu administration.
At the same time, the process of preparing for the Games will create opportunities for Nigerians to learn new crafts, acquire technical skills, and engage in global-standard event management, thereby strengthening human capacity and innovation across industries.
Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the Nigeria Sports Commission, and Hon. Bukola Olopade, the Director General, have been widely recognized for their tireless and visionary leadership in repositioning Nigeria’s sporting sector.
Their commitment to facilitating infrastructural development and strengthening grassroots sports development has laid the foundation for Nigeria’s bold bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Under their leadership, the NSC is fostering strategic partnerships and driving innovation in sports administration, they have demonstrated the nation’s readiness to stage an event of such global magnitude.
Beyond the tangible gains, the hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games carries profound symbolic value. It would be a moment of unity and pride, a chance for Nigeria to showcase its cultural richness, resilience, and excellence to the world.
As a centenary edition, the Games would stand as a historic milestone not just for the Commonwealth but for Nigeria itself, cementing its place on the global stage as a capable, ambitious, and forward-looking nation.
The gains from hosting the Commonwealth Games can never be undermined or overemphasized. This is Nigeria’s time to step forward and show the world our resilience, and excellence. We call on every Nigerian, across sectors and communities, to support this noble aspiration.
Nigeria’s pursuit of the 2030 Commonwealth Games is a vision for transformation, a blueprint for national development, and a legacy project that will inspire generations to come.
