NGO tasks nollywood to change society stereotypes of rape victims
Mrs Mbanan Mku, Communication Lead, Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) has called on the nollywood industry to change the society stereotypes of rape victims.
Mku said during a news conference in Abuja on Thursday on the Homevida 2019 Rape and Sexual Abuse Competition.
According to her, nollywood has the capacity of molding and changing the perception and behaviour of the society which informed the Homevida 2019 competition.
“Homevide has focused on providing incentive to young scriptwriter and filmmaker which has birth the production of over 24 Homevide Short Films that focus on key societal issues such as good governance,cyber bully, digital economy, human trafficking, among others.
“However, this year competition is in support from Luminate as we have put out a call for short scripts skits and spoken word videos that focus on rape and sexual abuse which will end on the November 30,” she said.
She added that the society should stop stigmatising rape victims but the rapist saying that by shaming the perpetrators of rape, it will encourage the victim to come out and speak out.
‘This issue has been recurrent online and offline in the past year. Some example are the recently released BBC Africa documentary Sex For Grades and the tape story of the 13 year-old Ochanya which lead to her death.
“The aim of the competition is to raise awareness on these issues, provide rehabilitative solutions to those who have been victims and also to urge the government to adopt effective policies that will be put in place to punish the perpetrators,” she added.
Mku added that the winning script would be turned into a short film and premiered alongside the winning skit or spoken word video at 2019 Homevide award in December.
She said the winners would also be awarded with a cash prize worth N750,000.

FCT Outplays Edo to Grab Handball Bronze at Gateway Games

Team FCT bounced back from their narrow semi-final defeat to hosts Ogun State with an emphatic victory over Team Edo to secure the bronze medal in handball at the 2024 Gateway Games.
In the third-place match played on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the resilient FCT side dominated proceedings and overpowered their Edo counterparts with a convincing 30–17 win.
Displaying determination and teamwork, Team FCT shook off the disappointment of missing out on the final and ended the tournament on a high, earning praise from spectators and officials alike for their spirited performance.
Speaking after the victory, FCT Handball Coach Ayo Joshua attributed the success to the team’s resilience and strong desire to win a medal.
“We planned for gold but, unfortunately, we couldn’t achieve that. However, we are happy that we didn’t leave Ogun State empty-handed—we were able to secure the bronze medal,” he said.
“We have the best team, skillful players who follow instructions, and by the grace of God, come the next festival in Enugu, FCT Handball will come out even stronger.”
