Abakaliki: Crisis imminent in National Obstetric Fistula Centre, unless

Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the alleged fraudulent decision of the Federal Ministry of Health to appoint an unqualified personnel to head the National Obstetric Fistula Centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State to avoid imminent crisis.

The South East Chapter of the body in a petition to President Buhari through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and signed by Dr. Nwaogwugwu Justus, the body said the act at the Centre may record one of the worst case of corruption which the government is working tirelessly to nip in the bud.

In the letter dated, May 15, 2019, the Consultants claimed that it will be a monumental failure for the government to allow top officials of the FMOH to manipulate the recruitment process and appoint a non-qualified personnel as the Medical Director of the centre.

In the letter, the body accused the Federal Ministry of Health of malignant corruption and maladministration which they have perfected in the selection of Medical Directors and Chief Medical Directors in the Federal Tertiary institutions in the country.

They said the selection is always based on the highest bidder, this, they alleged is perfected by the the Director of Hospital Services in the FMOH.

“A classic example is the selection of the Medical of the Medical Director of National Obstetric Centre, Abakaliki which was held in February 2019 and uptill now the result has not been released by the FMOH.

“In this scenario, ground rules were set and based on this, a professor of Obstetric and Gynaecology of international repute who had over 200 in peer review journal was disqualified. It is dishearten to note that one Dr Obuna Johnson who currently has a case of culpable homicide is being favoured by the top officials of the FMOH,” they said.

The body said Dr. Johnson was not a qualified fistula surgeon as was attested to by two written attestation from two medical directors of the federal tertiary hospital in the State and it was surprised he is been backed by the ministry to get the job.

“The FMOH is keen to force a non  Fistula surgeon on an institution which is highly subspecialized, this is like making a general surgeon head of an Orthopaedic hospital,” the stated in the petition.

They urged the government to prompt security agencies to question the top officials of the FMOH on why they are insisting on the candidacy of Dr Johnson.

He also thanked the President of the Association of Eze Ndigbo in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Eze Uche Egenti, for his support to Ohanaeze’s conventions and summits, especially in the FCT.

“The most important person we will thank for the success of this convention is the Chairman, Ndieze Igbo in the 19 Northern States of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Uche Ezeudo.

“I want to use this opportunity to thank the FCT minister for his prompt intervention, especially when the FCT was rife with kidnapping, causing residents sleepless nights. We appreciate his proactive response.

“We also thank the Igwe for his prompt action by dismantling all criminal hideouts, promising to persecute those arrested,” he said.

He decried the seeming marginalisation of Ndigbo in the scheme of things.
“I want to use this opportunity to tell Nigerians that Igbos have been in the dark for a long time, with respect to the measures embarked upon by the minister of agriculture. We have not been carried along, especially Igbo representatives in the FCT.
