Xenophobia: Nigerian students threaten showdown on South African businesses

Nigerian students have threatened to shut down MTN, Shoprite, DSTV and other South African businesses in the country over the killings of Nigerians in South Africa.

Mr Danielson Akpan, President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) made this position known in Abuja on.

Akpan said it was time Nigerian students speak up against the incessant attacks on Nigerians in the country.

He noted that the issues of xenophobia had been reoccurring in recent times and the government had not been able to curb the menace.

He added that the students would soon hit the street in protest saying the time would not be communicated but it would be sudden.

According to him, Nigerian students are disappointed in the way the Federal Government is managing the issue.

“Xenophobia did not just start now, it dates back to past governments but none could do anything about it.

“I want to really say that if our government had played their role in curbing this problem, there would not be any reason for students to come together unanimously to resist it.

“ It is now a reoccurring thing and if we don’t stop it, it might degenerate to something that will not be beneficial to us now and in the future.’’

The president further said the decision of the association was orchestrated by the inability of international organisations and the Nigerian government to act.

He, therefore, said that the goal of the protest was to call the attention of government both internationally and nationally to dive into the matter.
